The dust has settled and it’s great news for Honda Civic fans, as the Civic took home 2016 North American Car of the Year honors at the Detroit Auto Show. There’s been quite a bit of buzz around the new Honda Civic, especially the new Civic Type R. Fresh off the heels of the Los Angeles Auto Show, the new Civic has got plenty of buzz around it headed into the New Year.
Honda’s newest Civic is more than just a refined ninth-generation, it’s a true step forward in design and implementation. When you throw in the development of Honda’s new turbo VTEC Earth Dreams engine, it cranks up the excitement and hype just a tad further.
This means it’s open season once again for Honda enthusiasts whose number had dwindled since 2000. It seemed to many Honda fans that the Japanese automaker had made a concerted effort to distance themselves from the modification crowd in recent years.
As if to tell enthusiasts to leave their cars alone, the 2001+ Civic did away with lots of the features modders had grown to love. Gone where the interchangeability of the DOHC VTEC engine, and double wishbone suspension. In their place was more anti-theft measures and cheaper but less efficient MacPherson struts.
The new Honda Civic looks to reclaim those glory days, specifically taking aim at the current crop of sport coupes and hatchbacks. Honda’s doing it to the beat of their own drum of course, in typical fashion. With a heavy emphasis with an overall quieter and more refined cabin, the tenth generation Civic is made to excel.
Winning the 2016 Car of the Year, this generation of Honda Civic looks to be the one that might redefine the sport compact segment once again. We’ve driven the new 2016 Honda Civic, and we look forward to strapping on some modifications to try and unlock more power.
It’s no surprise that the new 2016 Honda Civic won this award, but any true Honda fan has got be looking forward to the Type R coming this summer.
