Do you find the concept of a 700 horsepower Ford Mustang R-Spec puzzling? You aren’t alone. Given that the GT500 produces similar power numbers from a completely different engine, it’s fair to say that Ford has more than just a few tricks up their sleeve.

Far from the US GT500, the Ford Mustang R-Spec has been modified extensively by Herrod Performance. Renowned for their prowess with the Mustang and the GT500 in particular, this tuner has taken the 5.0 liter V8 to new heights. How does the R-Spec produce so much power you ask?

The centerpiece of this special trim model is the supercharger by Ford Performance Roush. This supercharger ups the power numbers and increases torque to 610 ft-lbs. While many Ford fans seemed confused about what makes the R-spec work, there’s no doubting the pedigree of performance. Herrod Performance provided much of the insight into the tuning aspect of the all-new Ford Mustang.

Of course, the powerplant wasn’t the main focus for Ford or Herrod. Along with the sizeable horsepower claims, Ford’s new R-Spec also comes with several upgrades to help you keep the power down on the street.

Featuring a bevy of suspension upgrades, the R-Spec is ready to attack any track. Ford’s magnetic damper technology powers each corner, and grip is improved through a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.
