When Chevy first announced news of the GXE Corvette and their goals of 220 MPH, they set the table for the tremendous hype around the electric sports car. Genovation GXE is basically a Corvette Grand Sport transformed into an all-electric speed demon, and it just hit a top speed of 211.8 MPH.

Chevy says that the GXE Corvette moniker stands for Genovation Extreme Electric, their first foray into electric hypercar performance. Electric supercars are gaining traction, and quickly becoming the norm for such platforms as the Acura NSX as well as the Tesla series of performance cars.

How fast is the GXE Corvette?

The new electric Corvette set a top speed of 211 MPH at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds at the Kennedy Space Center. Bohmer is, of course, the driver that hit 292 MPH in a Ford GT, and famously has been assisting in the testing of the Genovation Corvette. Chevy says that their goal is to top 220 MPH, an incredible feat to be sure.

There have been many variations of the GXE thus far, and Chevy doesn’t look like they are done tinkering. This version is utilizing a dual-motor configuration that’s attached to the rear driveshaft. Using a battery pack that Chevy claim will meet and exceed 250kW of power, the GXE Corvette uses not one but two inverters to produce this kind of power.

The current configuration is rated at more than 800 horsepower and exceeds 700 ft-lbs of torque. Mated to a seven-speed manual transmission, the Corvette is also available in a eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters. With nearly perfect 50/50 balance and generous use of carbon fiber throughout, the GXE is ready to take on all comers.

Currently, Chevy plans on building just 75 of these incredible machines. Should you want one, it will set you back $750,000 and deliveries are due to start soon.
