Jeep Recalls 201,976 SUVs Because the TPMS May Not Detect a Low Tire

Stellantis is recalling 201,976 Jeep vehicles because the tire-pressure monitoring system may fail to detect low pressure or illuminate the required dashboard warning.

The problem is not a defective tire, valve stem or wheel-mounted pressure sensor. It is faulty software inside the vehicle’s Radio Frequency Hub module. Depending on the failure mode, the module can lose stored reference pressures or prevent tire-pressure values from updating correctly.

That leaves owners with a system designed to warn about an underinflated tire that may not recognize the underinflated tire. The conventional handheld pressure gauge remains unaffected because it has successfully resisted becoming a software platform.

The recall is identified as NHTSA campaign 26V559 and Jeep campaign 54D. Dealers will reprogram the Radio Frequency Hub, or RFH, free of charge. FCA plans to begin notifying owners on September 29, 2026, with notices continuing in phases through October 21.

Owners can already check their vehicle through the NHTSA recall lookup or the official Mopar VIN recall search.

Which Jeep models are included in recall 54D?

The campaign includes selected vehicles across nine Jeep model and powertrain groups:

The Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L account for most of the recall population. However, a matching model and year do not automatically prove that a particular vehicle is included.

Recall eligibility is determined by the 17-character VIN. Production dates, software versions and installed module configurations matter, so owners should use an official lookup instead of assuming every 2024–2026 Jeep is affected.

The VIN is normally visible through the lower driver-side windshield and printed on the driver-door certification label, registration and insurance documents.

What is wrong with the Jeep tire-pressure system?

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 138 requires covered vehicles to use a tire-pressure monitoring system capable of detecting significant underinflation and illuminating a warning telltale.

According to FCA’s filing, the affected RFH software can cause the TPMS to lose functionality in three identified ways. During its investigation, FCA found conditions involving lost reference tire-pressure values and another condition that prevented pressure values from updating.

The stored reference value matters because the controller needs valid information to determine whether the reported pressure is outside the acceptable range. If the software loses that reference or stops processing current readings, the dashboard may not provide the warning required by the federal standard.

The tire can continue losing air even when the screen has nothing useful to say about it.

What does the Radio Frequency Hub do?

The RFH is an electronic module that manages radio-frequency communication for several vehicle functions. Its exact duties vary by application, but the hub can interact with systems such as passive entry, keyless functions and tire-pressure monitoring.

Each wheel-mounted TPMS sensor measures pressure and broadcasts information wirelessly. The vehicle must receive that information, associate it with the system and process it correctly before the instrument cluster can display pressures or warn the driver.

That creates a chain of operation:

  1. A wheel sensor measures tire pressure.
  2. The sensor broadcasts its information.
  3. The RFH receives and processes TPMS data.
  4. Stored reference values are used to evaluate the reading.
  5. Vehicle electronics command the instrument-cluster display or warning.

A perfectly functional sensor cannot guarantee a warning if the receiving module mishandles the data. Replacing the wheel sensor would therefore be an expensive way to leave the recalled software exactly where it was.

What warning signs may owners see?

The defect report says there may be no warning before the TPMS loses its intended function. Depending on how the software fails, the driver may see:

  • A message instructing the owner to service the tire-pressure system
  • A malfunction indicator light
  • Dashes displayed instead of the vehicle’s placard pressure values
  • Tire-pressure readings that fail to update
  • No low-pressure warning when a tire is underinflated

The absence of a dashboard message does not establish that the system is working. That is the entire inconvenience of recalling a warning system for failing to provide a warning.

Owners should manually check all four tires with an accurate gauge, especially before highway travel, towing, carrying heavy loads or driving after a major temperature change.

Why low tire pressure matters on a heavy SUV

Low pressure changes more than the appearance of a tire. It allows additional sidewall flex, which creates heat and can make the vehicle respond less predictably.

Possible consequences include:

  • Longer braking distances
  • Slower steering response
  • Reduced cornering stability
  • Increased heat buildup
  • Accelerated shoulder wear
  • Lower fuel economy
  • Greater risk of tire damage or failure

Those effects matter on any vehicle, but the recalled lineup includes large three-row SUVs capable of carrying substantial passenger and cargo loads. Vehicle weight, speed, ambient temperature and load all increase the importance of correct inflation.

Use the cold-inflation pressure printed on the driver-door placard. Do not use the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall as the routine inflation target. The sidewall number describes the tire’s rated limit under specified conditions; it is not Jeep’s recommended setting for the vehicle.

Does the recall mean the TPMS sensors need replacement?

No. The announced remedy is RFH-module reprogramming.

The NHTSA filing does not instruct dealers to replace all four wheel sensors, tires or valve stems. Owners should not purchase new sensors as a substitute for completing campaign 54D.

TPMS sensors can still fail for unrelated reasons, including depleted internal batteries, physical damage, corrosion, incorrect frequency or improper programming. Replacement sensors may also be required when installing another wheel set. Those are separate maintenance or modification concerns.

Can owners fix recall 54D themselves?

The official remedy requires the RFH to be reprogrammed with corrected software. FCA says an authorized dealer will perform that work at no cost.

This is not the same as clearing a trouble code, disconnecting the battery or performing a normal TPMS relearn. Those actions cannot replace the defective calibration with the approved recall software.

Owners should also avoid experimenting with module programming while the campaign remains open. Interrupted programming, low battery voltage or an incompatible software package can create additional faults. A straightforward tire-warning recall does not need to become a no-start diagnosis through personal initiative.

TPMS relearning and RFH reprogramming are different

A TPMS relearn teaches the vehicle which wheel sensors are installed or where they are located. It may be required after sensor replacement, tire rotation or wheel changes, depending on the vehicle.

RFH reprogramming changes the operating software inside the receiving module. Campaign 54D addresses the latter.

Running a relearn and seeing four sensor IDs may prove that the sensors can communicate during the procedure. It does not certify that the recalled RFH software will always retain and evaluate the correct reference values.

How technicians should approach related symptoms

If a Jeep displays dashes, a TPMS-service message or inconsistent readings, begin by checking for campaign 54D before selling parts.

A sensible diagnostic path includes:

  1. Confirm the VIN and open-recall status.
  2. Check all tire pressures with a known-accurate gauge.
  3. Perform a complete vehicle scan and record codes before clearing anything.
  4. Compare live TPMS data with actual measured pressures.
  5. Verify whether all wheel sensors respond to an activation tool.
  6. Inspect for damaged wheels, valve stems or recently installed sensors.
  7. Confirm the RFH software level and recall completion status.
  8. Complete the official reprogramming before condemning unrelated parts.

Do not perform resistance tests on powered circuits, and do not assume that a correct CAN measurement validates the RFH software. Wiring integrity and software logic are different layers of the same increasingly crowded electronics department.

How to check whether your Jeep is recalled

Owners should take the following steps:

  1. Locate the vehicle’s VIN.
  2. Search it through NHTSA.
  3. Check the official Mopar recall database.
  4. Look for NHTSA campaign 26V559 or FCA campaign 54D.
  5. Contact an authorized Jeep dealer if the campaign appears open.
  6. Ask the dealer to confirm when the corrected RFH software is available.
  7. Continue checking tire pressure manually until the repair is completed.
  8. Retain the repair order showing that campaign 54D was performed.

NHTSA notes that newly announced campaigns may not immediately appear for every VIN. If the model and year match but the lookup initially reports no open recall, check again or contact Jeep directly.

Is it safe to drive an affected Jeep?

The filing does not include a park-outside or do-not-drive instruction. The immediate concern is that the vehicle may fail to warn the driver about low tire pressure.

Owners should not ignore visible tire damage, pulling, vibration, abnormal steering response or a tire that repeatedly loses pressure. Check the tires manually and arrange professional inspection when a pressure loss cannot be explained by normal temperature change.

Completing the recall remains necessary even if all four pressure readings appear normal today. A safety recall corrects a condition before it contributes to an incident; it is not an award presented after the warning light finally fails.

Why this Jeep TPMS recall matters

Campaign 54D demonstrates how much software now sits between a physical condition and the driver who needs to know about it.

The tire contains air. A sensor measures it. A radio module receives the measurement. Software stores reference values. Other electronics decide what appears in the instrument cluster. When one part of that chain fails, an underinflated tire can remain physically real while becoming digitally invisible.

That does not make TPMS useless. A properly functioning system provides valuable early warning and can catch a slow leak before it damages a tire. It does mean owners should understand its limits.

The dashboard is a monitoring aid. It is not a replacement for inspection, a pressure gauge or the deeply unfashionable practice of occasionally looking at the tires.
