Front wheel contestants need not apply, and Honda Civic Type R records are being broken at a historic rate. There is simply no stopping Honda as their hot hatchback continues to dominate both abroad and at home. With so many Honda Civic Type R records already to their name, it’s a testament to the FK8 and the turbo VTEC powerplant. Rumors of the Honda Civic Type R coming stateside have long generated a buzz, and turns out Honda fans everywhere were justified in their long wait.

After the Type R set records at both Nurburgring and France’s Magny-Cours racetrack, the FK8 did it again in grand fashion. The turbo VTEC hatchback made waves with news that the Honda Civic Type R records a lap time of 2 minutes and 53.72 seconds in the production FWD class at the Belguim Spa-Francorchamps race track.

The previous record at the Belgium racetrack came in at 2 minutes, 56.91 seconds. It should come to no surprise that an earlier Honda Civic Type R records this mark. Honda’s dominance in the hatch market thus far as been so great, evident by all the press the turbo Type R has generated. After taking home the 2017 BBC Top Gear Magazine Car of the Year awards, the Type R looks unstoppable.

Piloted by the LMP2 champion and Japanese Super GT driver Bertrand Baguette, it’s another feather in the cap with this Honda Civic Type R performance. Honda’s not done yet as it ramps up the European leg of their global trot. Next up are a new set of Honda Civic Type R records at Hungaroring, Silverstone, and Estoril over the summer. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Honda take down more Type R records as the FK8 continues it’s front wheel drive warpath.
