There’s been quite a bit of talk about Honda’s new kei car, and at the 2016 Tokyo Auto Salon the Mugen S660 is at the forefront. Honda will be showing off several iterations of their popular models, including the Civic Type R and the HR-V crossover. As expected Mugen brought out their take on the diminutive roadster with two highly modified models.
Mugen has long acted like Honda’s arm of motorsports and competition, providing awe-inspiring modifications and builds over the years. Building on founder Hirotashi Honda’s beliefs the name is synonymous with Honda performance and racing. From street level performance to track prepped race machines, their name is legendary in Honda circles.
Teaming up once again for the Tokyo salon, Honda and Mugen have a stable of modified vehicles to show.
The Mugen S660 is at the forefront of Honda’s newest offerings in Japan, but most enthusiasts here in the US are waiting for the new turbo Honda Civic Type R. While the kei car concept looks hot in Japan, it’s the upcoming hatchback wars that the Civic Type R is expected to make a mark on.
In what could very possibly kick off a new generation of modified Hondas, the long awaited Civic hatchback is one of the models to look forward to in the New Year. Based on the new Honda VTEC engine, the new Civic Type R is one of the big contenders in the upcoming hatchback battle.
For the 2016 Tokyo Auto Salon, the Mugen kei car could still be one of the biggest draws. The Mugen S660 roadsters feature several upgrades to the chassis and powerplant, including an incredible looking rear tonneau cover. Many of these upgrades look to be similar to Honda’s Modulo suite of modifications, but Mugen’s take looks to be the most interesting.
That’s not all that Honda has in store at the Tokyo Auto Salon, showing off a Step WGN Spada minivan and a customized HR-V crossover, along with the Fit, N-One, and N-Box. What Honda model are you most interested this upcoming year? Leave us a comment below and let us know!
