According to new “company insider” information posted at Autocar, the new turbo S2000 may soon become a reality. The rumors of a new turbo S2000 have been swirling around automotive forums and websites for a few years now, but now we’ve got some evidence pointing to the engine of choice.

Autocar’s insiders have reported that the new turbo S2000 might be based on the new 1.5 liter VTEC turbo engine. As the base Earth Dreams engine, it’s not a bad performer at 176 horsepower. However we’d be holding out for the 2.0 liter new VTEC engine, which could push the power numbers well into the 300 horsepower mark.

Earth Dreams Engine in the new Turbo S2000?

Honda’s performance rebirth is headlined by the Acura NSX, so talk of a new turbo S2000 makes sense. The rear wheel drive coupe is still an extremely strong performer one of the best track cars you can buy. This doesn’t change the fact that Honda could use the new Earth Dreams engine series as a base for the new roadster.

Of course the 1.5 liter isn’t the only horse in Honda’s stable. Their new Earth Dreams engine is based on the new VTEC technology, and evolves the i-VTEC features further.

Could the next Honda be a turbo S2000?

Honda has had an inspired direction in bringing back their performance platforms. From their S660 roadster in Japan, to the all new Civic Type R, it’s clear they mean business. Considering the new turbo Civic Type R will be using the 2.0 liter platform, it only makes sense for the turbo S2000.

Although the days of turbocharged Honda performance are certainly not dead, Honda fans have seen better days. Could the new turbo S2000 and Civic Type R revive some of the small displacement, engine swapping goodness of the mid to late 90s?

Only time will tell but if these rumors are true it could spark a new era of Honda performance that could rival days long past. What do you think about the chances of an all new turbo S2000? Leave us a comment below and let us know!
