How to fuel pressure regulator install
Most EFI vehicles have their fuel pressure regulator mounted to their fuel rail. Before you begin the fuel pressure regulator install, you must always use the proper safety measures. If you are unsure of any step of this process, please stop and take your vehicle to a professional.
The first part of the fuel pressure regulator install guide will cover the installation of a replacement FPR. This assumes that you already know what regulator fits your car.
Before beginning your install, make sure to always disconnect your battery terminals. Always operate with safety in mind and with the proper eye protection as your fuel system is under pressure.
Locate your fuel pressure regulator, and disconnect the fuel feed and return lines. When you have these two lines disconnected, you must then replace the FPR. Tuners that want a complete fuel pressure regulator replacement or bypass usually purchase a universal unit.
Good news is, you usually have the hardware to complete the install when you purchase the FPR. Most fuel pressure regulator install jobs fall under this category.

Steps to complete a bolt on fuel pressure regulator install
These types of fuel pressure regulators are usually perfect for cranking up your fuel pressure just a tad. If you have modified your vehicle and it is running lean, you can get away with this mod.
When looking for a bolt on kit, make sure to purchase one that’s made for your car. Today I’ll show you how to modify a Honda Civic in this fuel pressure regulator install. The part we are installing is an old school B&M style FPR.
Our test vehicle is a 2000 Honda Civic equipped with a Jackson Racing Supercharger. This vehicle is running lean, and we’ll be raising fuel pressure to restore the proper air fuel ratio.
Tools you will need for a fuel pressure regulator install
A fuel pressure gauge such as B&M; or AutoMeter
- 10mm Socket and Drive
- 3/16″, 1/2″ wrench
- Pliers
- Bench Saw
- 7/64″ Hex Wrench
The first step or the install is to disconnect the positive terminal from the battery. This ensures that there is no possibility of any accidents related to fuel.
Now undo your fuel cap. This will help relieve pressure in the fuel system.
You will be disconnecting a few hoses at this stage. One is your lead vacuum line. This usually runs from your intake manifold or intake system. It’s also one of the smallest hoses on your fuel pressure regulator.
When you are at this part of our fuel pressure regulator install, you can then disconnect the feed and return.
Locate some used rags and place them under your FPR to catch the fuel that will drip out of your rail and / or lines.
You can now undo your fuel return line clamp. Unbolt your fuel pressure regulator and clean it carefully. Using a bench saw or hacksaw, you can cut off the top of your regulator. Use a file to even out the rough edges of the part.
When you are done you can mount the adapter to the FPR. Make sure to use the replacement o-rings during assembly. When you are mounting or aligning the FPR, make sure to use the supplied adapter plate.
Once you have assembled your new FPR, make sure all the screws are tight and snug.
Make sure the oring is intact and put your new FPR back onto your fuel rail. Start your vehicle and check for any fuel leaks. When completing your fuel pressure regulator install, make sure to seek out a tuner.
