How To Service Your 2JZ Oil Pump

If you follow our blog you know we are huge fans of the 2JZGTE as well as the 2JZGE for the stout ability to produce horsepower by way of raising boost pressure. The twin turbocharged inline six is becoming more and more of a common engine swap for those seeking inline six turbo power, but many times we see customers cutting corners when it comes to their swap.

Bottom line is however, if you are swapping a 2JZ, learning How To Service Your 2JZ Oil Pump is imperative.

Such shortcuts may be be quick, dirty and easy but rarely are they reliable considering the amount of work and effort it takes to swap a 2JZ into anything.

Today we’ll be looking at the 2JZ oil pump, or more specifically how to service / check the tolerances. The Toyota part number for this unit is 15100-46052, Oil Pump and it isn’t exactly a cheap part. So why put your 2JZ motor into the swap candidate of your choice without checking your oil pump?

We are assuming you have your motor already removed and preferably on an engine stand as that will ease the process of checking your Toyota 2JZ Oil Pump.

First remove your lower oil pan to access the rest of the bolts that hold the upper oil pan in place, you will need to remove this pan, the windage tray and all bolts in order to remove your factory oil pump.

Remove the bolts under your lower oil pan to gently remove your upper aluminum 2JZ oil pan, and then remove the windage tray and the 10mm bolts that secure the windage tray.

Remove your front crank pulley and the crank position sensor to prevent any damage from coming to them while you are measuring your oil pump gear tolerances.

Remove all the bolts that secure your oil pump in place and remove it, you will need a Toyota part or you can opt to use a impact driver to undo the screws that hold the 2JZ oil pump cover.

You are done with the removal part of our How To Service Your 2JZ Oil Pump, now it’s on to measuring the play within the gears to ensure your 2JZ oil pump still works.

Now with the oil pump cover removed, use a feeler gauge to test the clearances in your 2JZ oil pump drive gears. You want to make sure they are not out of spec, so your 2JZ stays lubricated even under the highest of stresses.

2JZ Oil Pump Gear Tip Clearances:

Standard tip clearance:
2JZ–GE – 0.310–0.490 mm – (0.0122–0.0193 in.)
2JZ–GTE – 0.056–0.326 mm – (0.0022–0.0128 in.)
Maximum tip clearance:
2JZ–GE – 0.53 mm (0.0209 in.)
2JZ–GTE – 0.40 mm (0.0157 in.)

The 2JZ oil pump gears must clear a tolerance between these 2 ranges, if your 2JZ oil pump tolerances fall outside of these parameters you will need a new set of Oil Pump Gears. This is the crucial and important step of How To Service Your 2JZ Oil Pump.

When installing new 2JZ oil pump gears, make sure you have them properly aligned using the oil pump drive gear marks shown below :

C. Inspect rotor body clearance

Standard body clearance:
2JZ–GE – 0.100–0.175 mm (0.0039–0.0069 in.)
2JZ–GTE – 0.080–0.135 mm (0.0031–0.0053 in.)
Maximum body clearance:
2JZ–GE – 0.20 mm (0.0079 in.)
2JZ–GTE – 0.16 mm (0.0063 in.)
The 2JZ oil pump gears must clear a tolerance between these 2 ranges, if your 2JZ oil pump tolerances fall outside of these parameters you will need a new Toyota Oil Pump.
