We’ll begin with the 1984-1992 Volkswagen, or the second generation Jetta. Of course when you are installing an aftermarket stereo, the process can be made easier by using a digital multimeter.
Second Gen Jetta Stereo Wiring Guide – 1984-1992
The early generation Jetta is a bit different when you want to install a stereo. Mounting is easy due to the double DIN design, although the wiring can be a hassle. This generation of Jetta does not have a switched power source, so you’ll need to run your remote stereo wire to the ignition column.
Jetta Stereo Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Red
Jetta Stereo Ground Wire: Brown
Car Radio Illumination Wire: Gray/Blue
Car Stereo Antenna Trigger Wire: White
The front speaker wires are mounted into the dashboard, which can be difficult to replace if you are upgrading speakers.

Third Gen Jetta Stereo Wiring Guide – 1992-1999
The next generation of Jetta had multiple stereo types, depending on the build. In premium models late in this build, the optional Monsoon stereo system made it harder to upgrade.

Using a single or double DIN setup is easy to do in your Jetta. Because the climate controls are placed under the stereo, all you need is the right mounting brackets.
If your Jetta comes with a Monsoon premium stereo system, the amplifier will be mounted to each speaker. Because of this reason it’s slightly harder to upgrade your Jetta stereo system.

From the factory the stock Jetta stereo is easy to remove, and equipped with a single DIN slot. If you are intending to mount a motorized flip up stereo, you will need the right sized mounting brackets.

Fourth Gen Jetta Stereo Wiring Guide – 1999-2006
This generation of Volkswagen takes a big step forward with the Monsoon system. Because installing a stereo is harder in a Jetta with a Monsoon system in it. You will need to find the Monsoon harness, which is behind your stereo in most Jettas.
There’s changes to the single DIN layout of the Volkswagen in this generation. There’s more space than the previous year Jetta, so you can install a double DIN stereo if you need to.

Of course if you are installing a stereo with a flip up face, it’s best to move the single DIN pocket under your aftermarket stereo. This will allow you to gain more access at the top of your Jetta dashboard.

Looking at the VW plug (wiring from the car [Jetta SE 2011]) there are three sets of wires. One set goes to the standard set of pins for the speakers, one goes to a small green plug (four wires) and the other goes to a small blue plug (four wires). All three are part of the overall block that plugs into the stereo. However, the aftermarket harness I have does not use the blue and green plugs. Any idea what those are for?
Hi Dan, sounds like you’ve got quite a project with your Volkswagen Jetta stereo install.
As far as the blue and green plugs are concerned one should lead to your ECU and the rest of your dash harness. You say you are using a plug and play harness to complete your Jetta stereo install? If so you should be set, and the other plugs should be able to be left alone. Did your Jetta come with the premium sound?
Every job turns into a lesson in patience. The harness that came with the radio does work. You are correct in saying that I can ignore the two connectors. In essence, I was expecting point A to point B for the wiring … not the case 🙂 I don’t have the premium sound. I did manage to get it connected last night and working fine. Some little niggly-naggly things but nothing keeping it from working. I received a response from the seller and he answered all the questions I asked.
I did have one new question though. I was going to hook up the backup-camera which says to pull power from the reverse lights. However, in the Jetta, VW uses something called duty-cycle when the car is running. When the key is off and power is from the battery only, the camera works fine. When the car is running, the camera doesn’t work properly. This link explains the problem. I would like to put a relay in there as one of the responders said he did. Also, the wire coming from the radio sends a trigger signal that only seems to work once while the car is running. So if you stop at the mini-mart to grab something and leave the car running, the backup camera doesn’t kick back on when you put it in reverse. Is that a function of the radio or is there a way to get around that too?

As far as your duty cycle issue, I would recommend bypassing all of that nonsense and wiring it in directly to your ignition column. you would be wiring in the back up camera to the wire that comes from your “ON” position switch. OR alternately you can use an automotive SPDT relay to wire up everything safely. In fact this is what I would recommend. You could use the car on power wire and tee it into your switch on the relay. Sounds so easy! Which is why I am going to ask another question just to be sure! Using a standard switch, I would wire a hot (already available to battery or nearby from ignition ‘ON’) to tab 30, my camera to 87, the backup trigger to 86 and ground to 85. Is this standard switch a holding switch or once the trigger drops will I lose the power to the camera?
Once the trigger activates in the setup you describe you will have power. In a Single post automotive relay, it will trigger the power until you turn off the car! Hope that information helps out! Thanks again for commenting and let us know how your stereo install goes!

John – I would love to get my hands on a diagram specific to the 2011 Jetta SE. The aftermarket radio I installed works fine but I hate having left over wires and having no idea what is no longer connected. Shouldn’t matter but I “attempt” to have clean installs.

I am installing a double din radio in my 2006 Jetta 2.5. The factory radio has two antenna wires, one tan and one white. Every antenna adapter I find only has one adapter on it. Do they make an adapter that plugs into both the tan and the white? If not, do I plug the single one into the tan one or into the white one?

Hi i have a problem with my 2009 vw jetta, the model comes with a satellite radio and a aux port in the back of the console the only problem is that there is no button or button configuration that will let me access the aux input let alone the Bluetooth input. I have read of people having a similar issue when their battery is disconnected, the solution i have seen that worked is get a vag com cable and recode the audio system or spend 100 bucks. Is this true? is there any other way? and can you help me? thanks

I am trying to install an aftermarket stereo in a 2011 Jetta. I believe it has the premium Monsoon stereo. I used the harness that came with the after-market stereo and everything appeared to be working… EXCEPT that the radio does not turn off with the ignition. It is always receiving power regardless of the key being turned. I can turn off the radio manually but I’m worried that even when it’s off it will be a drain on the car battery.

Sounds like you’ve got a static Jetta power wire mixed up there. You will want to tap into the switched power wire instead. This wire can be in your Jetta stereo wiring, OR you can tap into the switched ignition power wire from your steering column. Use a multimeter to backpin the wires from the ignition switch and you’ll get it working shortly. Thanks for commenting!
Hi I have a 2011 Jetta sportwagen my radio quit on me, so I purchased a after market but my original Delphi radio has two inputs on the back that my new system doesn’t have, they are two white inputs on one side of the radio what are they for the cables are on my car but no place to connect them.

Hello, we are changing the radio in my 2010 jetta. everything has checked out so far, but our radio has an accessory wire. There is no wire coming from the car itself to hook up to. how can we bypass this? If we connect it to the Constant, it’s always on. Never shuts off even with the car turned off. Is there anything to do about this?
Hi Hailie, you will need to connect this wire to a switched power. If all else fails, you can connect to your ignition switch inside your steering column.
Hello, I do have a question… I just bought a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SE with a standard stereo, nothing special. Someone who had the car before I did had the stereo out and the wire harness is all hacked up…. My Bluetooth won’t connect and only my front speakers will work! They are all hooked up correctly, I think the harness is bad? There there is a small skinny red and white wire coming from the car, but there isn’t one coming from the harness…is that for Bluetooth?

hey this was probably the best info i can get and ive been searching.. 2011 Jetta S (base) so i was hearing like crackling in my front right speaker. i changed it out and now my rear bass boosted speakers are not working. ive bought this car used. when i first bought it though the audio ws sounding very good! As if it already had a system in it. help?? oh yeah so ive tried to reset the radio by holding the power button and i get some sort of pop like when you unplug mic. and then the safe mode comes up but for some reason i can still play music or bluetooth.. any ideas where my bass went? i dont want to upgrade if this cars audio was working just fune

Great to see you still replying John! As Michael mentioned about his speaker crackling. Mine as well was doing that. But I upgraded. Well so I thought. I’ve already connected two different amps to this system. On one amp I checked continuity on a speaker wire to the amp and I beeped on 3 different speaker output terminals. My radio is always on too. Also my radios light is switched on by my headlights. I don’t get my radio light until I turn my lights on.
whoa Michael, lots of electrical issues there… When did this begin? if your radio is always on, I would start there and make sure to connect to switched power. Start there and we can go through your issues if you read this.
