Honda Motors confirmed past Tuesday that there was yet another wave of Honda Takata airbag recalls looming in the very near future. According to initial reports, this next stage of airbag recalls includes over 1.2 million Honda and Acura models in North America.

To date Honda has recalled over 1.1 million vehicles, many of them multiple times in what has quickly become one of the biggest automotive fiascoes of all time.

The Takata airbag recall saga has gone on for quite some time, bringing safety equipment and quality control processes under federal scrutiny.

Given the impact of the Honda Takata airbag recalls, it’s yet another black eye for the Japanese automaker.

How serious are these Honda Takata airbag recalls?

Built with defective deployment hardware, the defective Takata airbags extremely dangerous. In the event of an airbag deployment, these faulty Takata units explode instead of safely inflating the safety equipment at hand.

The result? Shrapnel from the defective airbags could potentially harm or even kill the passengers. Takata has been extremely slow to provide the correct replacement inflators, causing delays in the Honda Takata airbag recall process.

According to their report, the recalled inflators were to be replaced as; “either as a permanent Takata airbag inflator recall replacement or as a service part installed following a crash or problem with the airbag itself.”

  • 2007 Honda Fit
  • 2002-2004 Honda Odyssey
  • 2003-2008 Honda Pilot
  • 2006-2014 Honda Ridgeline

There are a few Acura models that are included in the massive Honda Takata airbag recall as well.

  • 2013-2016 Acura ILX
  • 2003-2006 Acura MDX
  • 2002-2003 Acura 3.2TL
  • 2004-2006 and 2009-2014 Acura TL
  • 2007-2016 Acura RDX
  • 2010-2013 Acura ZDX

Fallout from the Honda Takata airbag recalls has identified the root cause of the issue as a factory in Takata’s Mexico facility. According to reports, the factory was guilty of negligence, leading to excessive moisture into the inflator during assembly.

Total fallout from the Honda Takata airbag recalls check in a just a shade over 21 million vehicles. The ongoing airbag recall efforts have accounted for over 7.2 million defective Takata air bag inflators in 2018.
