Upgrading your GMC Sierra stereo doesn’t have to be an expensive upgrade, especially when you’ve got our Sierra stereo wiring diagram. This guide is perfect when you are installing a new Sierra radio into your GMC truck. Designed to help you connect, upgrade and wire up any audio component in your GMC truck, this Sierra stereo wiring diagram has everything you need.
When you want to install a new Sierra stereo, most people opt for an expensive install facility. Indeed, these stereo installers can charge you quite a bit for a radio install in your GMC truck. When you want to save money, you can use our Sierra stereo wiring diagram and our How To guide to upgrading the Sierra radio. Of course you don’t need an aftermarket stereo to use this Sierra stereo wiring guide. You can use it when installing a factory stereo or a radio from another GMC vehicle or truck.
Today we’ll be covering all the years of GMC Sierra, and showing you which wire goes where in your truck. Of course if you have any questions about this Sierra stereo wiring diagram you can leave them for us below or contact us directly.
You can use this Sierra stereo wiring diagram to install just about anything in your truck. From a new Sierra stereo to upgraded truck speakers or a stereo amplifier, this wiring guide is here to help.
First generation Sierra Stereo Wiring Diagram (1999–2006)
One of the earlier models of Sierra shared quite a bit in common with the Silverado. Because of this similarity, the Sierra came with two versions in this early model. These versions are often referred to as the C1500 Sierra or the C2500 Sierra, and there’s differences as far as the Sierra stereo wiring diagram is concerned.
These early GMC Sierra stereos are based on a double DIN size. You can of course use a single DIN stereo, however you will need an install kit. These kits will come with the proper mounting hardware and allows you to bolt in a single DIN Sierra radio. Wiring up the remainder of the Sierra stereo wires is easy to do using our Sierra stereo wiring diagram.

Right Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Light Green
Right Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Dark Green
Left Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Brown

Right Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Dark Blue
Right Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Light Blue
Of course if you are opting for a dual DIN navigation system or DVD player in your GMC Sierra, no install kit is needed. You can mount the new Sierra stereo using the old factory mount rails and hardware.
For people who happen to own a C1500 GMC Sierra, there are a few differences. These include the GMC Sierra stereo ground wire, which is black with a white stripe in it, compared to the yellow wire. Your Sierra stereo ground wire is also brown now instead of the black, so if you pull out your stereo and see these primary speaker wires instead, use this guide.

As you notice the speaker wires remain largely unchanged. However there is a change to the Sierra stereo wiring diagram when it comes to the Sierra antenna trigger wire. This trigger wire is pink in the C1500 series of Sierra, and you’ll need this if you are retaining the power antenna.
The last stereo wiring to worry about in your C1500 GMC Sierra is the switched 12 volt wire. Unfortunately, like the Silverado the Sierra doesn’t have this wire. For switched power, you need to tap into the steering column and go off the ignition switch in your Sierra.
Second generation Sierra Stereo Wiring Diagram (2007–2013)
This generation of GMC truck has got a lot of value, because stereos from any other year range of Chevy / GMC truck or SUV will fit just fine. Again based on a double DIN based Sierra stereo, you’ll be able to get away with upgrading with just a mounting kit upgrade. Of course when you are looking to upgrade your stereo, you’ll need to remove the Sierra center console to access the Sierra stereo wires.
Much like the previous Sierra models, you’ll need an install kit to mount your single DIN stereo. Another popular upgrade is to take the navigation system from a Acadia or Saturn Outlook, as they share the same stereo connectors.

There’s differences between the premium model Sierra from this year generation when it comes to the factory subwoofer. This Sierra speaker is powered by the Sierra amplifier, so make sure to bypass this when upgrading your Sierra stereo.
We’ll cap our Sierra stereo wiring diagram off with the third and last generation of GMC truck.
Third generation Sierra Stereo Wiring Diagram (2014–present)
Because the latest Sierra includes a wide range of infotainment features, you may need additional parts when upgrading this generation of GMC Sierra. If you want to ditch the factory navigation or infotainment system, you’ll need a stereo dongle to bypass these features. Failure to install the right bypass could cause problems like your steering wheel Sierra stereo controls may not work, or the volume may be off.
Most aftermarket Sierra stereos will require a new install kit or stereo mounting kit. This allows you to eliminate the excess space around your factory stereo or head unit in your GMC Sierra.

If you own a GMC Sierra with a navigation system already, installing an aftermarket stereo is a little easier. Most aftermarket dual DIN setups will allow you to bolt up the factory Sierra mounting brackets for your radio. If you don’t have a navigation system equipped Sierra, there’s going to be some heavy modification required. Because you don’t have a infotainment screen here, you won’t need the standard Park Assist bypass or MyLink disable you would in the traditional truck.

I have a GMC sierra 1500 extended cab with a an after market stereo. The stereo was installed prior to me purchasing the truck. The stereo stays on even after the truck is off. I believe the stereo power is constantly on.
Do I switch the orange and yellow wire around or do I need to look into another area?
Thanks,
Hi Viso, thanks for reading
Sounds like you do indeed have the orange/yellow GMC Sierra stereo wire mixed up. If not, wire this into your ignition switch for best results!
Hope that helps! thanks for commenting!
My friend has a 2007 GMC Sierra Denali. I see no mention of a Denali version or year 2007?? So is the diagram for the 2008 the exact same as 2007 wire color code identical??
Hi Matt, yes you are correct the 2007 Denali stereo wiring will match the Sierra. Hope that helps!
Hi there – I have a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500. It came with a junk after market clarion that the previous owner put in there. It stays on until you to the key off. My question is, on your post, which part of the diagram would fit my truck? Cause I may need the information in case the guy cut the factory wire harness connectors.
Hi Jeff,
sounds like the previous owner of your Sierra wired the stereo to constant power. So you will need to disconnect the red power wire of your Clarion stereo, and wire that to switched power. I would recommend teeing that into your ignition column for best results. Hope that helps!
THANKS FOR THE GREAT INFO. I WAS INSTALLING AUTO 8 TRACK PLAYERS IN THE 70S, THEN CASS, THEN CD………. SOME THINGS HAVE NOT CHANGED. THE AIRBAG DEPLOYED IN MY 03 SIERRA FOR NO REASON, AND GM BOUGHT IT BACK. I STRIPPED THE OEM CD/CASS RADIO UNIT, THINKING I WOULD USE IT SOMEDAY. I AM NOW GOING TO USE IT IN A 1969 PLYMOUTH SATELLITE; JUST LIKE THE B52’S SONG “PLANET CLAIRE”; ITS FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF LIGHT!! THANKS AGAIN FOR THE HELP!!!!!
I have 2014 Sierra with aftermarket stereo. The head unit can be programmed to work with steering wheel controls. Which wire is the steering wheel control signal?
If you have a Sierra with stereo steering wheel controls, you will need a flying loom to help you make your GMC stereo install a plug and play affair.
do u know if a touch screen radio out of a 2013 truck or Yukon fit into a 2005 escalade with the stock base and nav touchscreen
