Honda announced an all-new redesigned Honda Civic today, fresh on the heels of their Instagram tease earlier this week. To top that off, Honda has announced that an all-new Civic Type R for the 2023 model year. Alongside the new Integra, old and new Honda fans have plenty to celebrate. While we definitely wish Honda would release a Civic hatchback, we definitely aren’t looking a gift horse in the mouth.
We don’t know everything Honda has planned for the retweaked sedan, but we definitely have a wish list. Here’s what we know so far.
Redesigned Honda Civic – What could be?
Powertrain – Not much is expected to change here. Despite the cries from the K series fans, the return of a 1.5L turbocharged i-VTEC engine makes perfect sense. Aftermarket tuners have embraced the 1.5liter, and with support continuing to build there’s not much reason to change here.
Drivetrain – Mated to a six-speed transmission and a helical LSD, the redesigned Honda Civic looks to keep its racing heritage intact. Changes to the automatic transmission equipped Civic’s could definitely be on the horizon though.
Chassis questions – After doing away with the Civic Si coupe and hatchback versions, Honda has strictly stuck to the Civic sedan. Could this be a marketing ploy for Honda to gauge interest in a return of the Civic Si hatchback? We sure hope so.
Performance upgrades – True to its heritage, the redesigned Honda Civic will also sport larger brakes and stiffer suspension. These changes will also include improvements to rigidity and handling, making the new Civic one of the “best handling” Hondas ever.
Speaking of, could some of the new Integra’s performance mods make their way to the Civic? I wouldn’t bet against it.
Honda will also put their money where their mouth is, prepping a special Civic Si specifically for 25 hours of Thunderhill. This race occurs between December 3-5 at California’s Thunderhill Raceway Park.
