Honda has been at the forefront of airbag revolution, especially since the largest US recall in history. With over 6 million vehicles affected, it’s telling that the airbag recall is still ongoing years later. From the ashes of corporate controversy centered around the Takata scandal, the new Honda airbag could truly change the game.
Together with Autoliv, the new airbag is an evolutionary approach to vehicle safety. Centered around a triple chambered airbag architecture, the design is meant to absorb shock with minimal impact.
Honda’s partnership with the leading supplier of automotive safety systems in the world began four years ago. Autoliv technology is widely recognized for its innovative and evolutionary precepts. Together, both companies are confident that the new Honda airbag system will make a huge difference in the not too distant future.
Inside the new Honda airbag
Rather than relying on the traditional single chamber to absorb impact, the 3 chambers help cushion any potential impact to the passenger. Autoliv’s engineers, together with Honda integrated an “uninflated volume” of air which helps reduce head trauma.
That’s not where the airbag evolution stops either. The outer layers of the new Honda airbag are meant to help cradle the passenger’s head and reduces rotation.
The new Honda airbag has also been called the “sail airbag ” for this simple reason.
This concept helps reduce whiplash or injury to the neck of the passenger, as well as any brain trauma.
IIHS Information – Honda Airbag
Recently the Institute of Highway Safety released a study that stated the majority of injuries in road accidents involved head rotation. The IIHS further went onto specify brain injury criterion to measure crash assessment injuries.
Based on this brain injury metric, the new Honda airbag has been estimated to reduce such injury up to 75% in multiple crash tests. Although the airbag is not the end-all of automotive safety, it speaks volumes that Honda is spearheading this effort.
We don’t know what models will receive the new Honda airbag, but we do know that Honda is expected to include it in multiple 2020 models. At this time the sail airbag is only meant for the front passenger seat, but it’s only a matter of time.
