Faulty Valve Springs Lead to Toyota-Subaru Recall

The Scion name is back in the news cycle, although for reasons that Toyota would much rather forget about. Scions’ duo of rear-wheel drive coupes is just one of the vehicles affected by the joint Toyota-Subaru recall. This particular recall is centered around faulty valve springs that could lead to premature engine failure.

Recalls have plagued Subaru in particular in recent months, and controversy is still on the horizon. Despite this faulty engine valve Toyota-Subaru recall, the Japanese manufacturer faces the unpleasant prospect of multiple recalls in the coming months.

What is the Toyota-Subaru Recall all about?

According to reports, the faulty valve springs can be found in over 400,000 vehicles manufactured between 2012 and 2013. This Toyota-Subaru recall encompasses several popular models, including but not limited to the Subaru BRZ, Impreza and Forester.

From the Toyota side of the Toyota-Subaru recall include the FR-S, the twin brother to the BRZ. Now re-badged as the Toyota 86, the popular coupe sports the same 2.0 liter boxer engine as the other models in the large
Toyota-Subaru recall.

From the valve spring recall, Toyota has the smaller share of vehicles affected. With just under 80,000 total vehicles to recall, the count for stateside recalls checks in at just over 25,000 or so.

Subaru isn’t as fortunate, with over 101,000 vehicles sold in Japan and an a yet to be disclosed number sold in the U.S.

How does the Toyota-Subaru recall affect me?

The recall itself is centered around the valve springs, which can fail over time. Without the proper tension, the valves will inevitably collide with the piston, causing a total engine failure. Both manufacturers have warned owners of engine stall, which could cause severe injury at high speed.

Subaru is scrambling to make things right by picking up most of the tab behind the Toyota-Subaru recall. According to reports from the Wall Street Journal the Japanese automaker is set to release new details around the recall and how it affects their earnings for the next quarter.
