There’s been quite a bit of buzz around the all new Acura NSX, and now there’s some talk that a NSX Type R may become a reality. While the new NSX has been met with some lukewarm reviews, Honda fans are holding their breath for a Type R version of the legendary Acura supercar.

According to some of the reports and rumors online, Honda may be building the NSX Type R to take on the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 and Ford Mustang. And according to many pundits, the NSX Type R concept has a long way to go.

The all new 2017 Acura NSX uses a trio of features a electric motors paired to a turbocharged 3.5 liter engine. This combination produces 573 horsepower and a total 569 lb-ft of torque. While many of the NSX detractors claim that the Acura NSX is slow, the numbers certainly don’t suggest that.

However short the NSX may be on horsepower, it doesn’t lack in hype. Super Bowl commercials and Honda teaser videos have hyped up the supercar to incredible heights. In fact the first NSX sold for over a million dollars, a testament to Honda’s full court marketing press.

Comments made by Nick Robinson who is the development leader that’s heading up the NSX seemed to hint at the NSX Type R. It will be a hot button topic for Honda fans, especially as the NSX gets ready to attack Pikes Peak challenge. One thing is for sure, if the NSX Type R does become a reality it will be a purpose built track machine that will live up to the expectations.

The new NSX does have quite a bit of potential on the track, but the VTEC supercar has got some catching up to do. In fact Motor Trend tested the new NSX against some stiff competition, illustrating this fact perfectly.

There has been some rumors behind a convertible NSX as well, which seems counter intuitive for the purpose built track machine. Whatever happens however, we’ll definitely be rooting for a new NSX Type R to take the VTEC supercar to new heights.
