Today I’ll be walking you through all the year ranges of the Mazda 626 stereo wiring, beginning with the third generation and the model year of 1982.
Whenever you are upgrading your stereo, or even just installing a MP3 player, CD player or car audio crossover, the hardest part of the Mazda 626 install is identifying the wires.
Third Gen 626 Stereo Wiring 1982–1987
One of the earlier Mazda 626 stereo setups found on our wiring guide, the third generation used the typical single DIN configuration.
Car Radio Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Blue/Red
Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: Blue/White
Car Radio Ground Wire: Chassis
Car Radio Illumination Wire: Red/Black
The early models did use an odd sized pocket which was larger than a typical double DIN stereo. The front Mazda 626 speakers were found in the front door panels. These speakers are 4″ in size and they can be tapped into the following speaker wire diagram below.
Left Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Blue
Left Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Blue/White
Right Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Blue/Yellow
Right Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Blue/Red
Left Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Blue/Red
Left Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Blue/Yellow
Right Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Blue/White
Right Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Blue/Green
Fourth Gen 626 Stereo Wiring 1987–1992
Changes to the next generation of Mazda sedan changed the way you complete any Mazda 626 stereo install. There are several changes in this year range. One of the things that stayed is the standard single DIN configuration and for most removable faces you will require new Mazda stereo mounting brackets.
Mazda 626 Radio Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Blue/Red
Mazda 626 Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: Blue/White
Mazda 626 Radio Ground Wire: Chassis
Mazda 626 Radio Illumination Wire: Red/Black

Fifth Gen 626 Stereo Wiring 1992-1997
The climate controls made the move above the Mazda stereo in this year range. This makes upgrading your Mazda 626 stereo more difficult if you have a motorized face or flip up screen. New Mazda 626 stereo mounting hardware will be needed to ensure that the your screen will not run into the climate controls or the Mazda dashboard.

The front Mazda 626 speakers can be upgraded to 6″ x 9″ from the standard 5″ x 7 ” inch speakers. These are mounted into the doors and can be accessed through the Mazda 626 stereo wiring guide below.

Sixth Gen 626 Stereo Wiring 1997–2002
The last model of Mazda 626 also went through several upgrades to the interior. You can easily upgrade the Mazda 626 stereo by installing a single DIN stereo and a DIN sized pocket.

Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: Blue/White
Car Radio Ground Wire: Chassis
Car Radio Illumination Wire: Red/Black
Depending on the model of your Mazda 626, your stereo system may come with the optional Bose sound system. This will typically include a double DIN factory stereo and a CD changer that’s mounted in the trunk. Eliminating the double DIN OEM radio is easy to do, from there you can use an install kit to mount your single DIN stereo.
Left Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Green/Orange
Left Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Green/Black
Right Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Green
Right Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Yellow/Green
Accessing the rear speakers is easy to do, and upgrading them will require access to the rear deck. When choosing to wire up your own Mazda 626 stereo, you can use this 626 Stereo Wiring car audio guide to do it.

Put a duel in my 97 626 matched all the wires to the harness power on everything works except no sound
Hi James, does your Mazda head unit light up? There’s no sound at all in any speaker?
I cannot find this combination of wires in the Mazda I just bought:
Car Radio Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Blue/Red
Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: Blue/White
Car Radio Ground Wire: Chassis
Car Radio Illumination Wire: Red/Black
The previous owner cut the wiring connector off….I can find the speaker wires…but I have a different combination of wires and theres 2 wires that just dont seem to match up at all…if you add up the number of wires including the speaker wires…I count 13 wires, yet theres only 11 accounted for in this listing and I dont have a red/black wire at all.
Hi Stephen,
so just to be clear, you don’t have the red/black Mazda 626 stereo wire at all? What wire from your Mazda is providing switched power and ground then? What year is your 626?
Let me know and I can try to help!
Trying to put in an aftermarket stereo in my 2002 Mazda 626 (JVC KWR940BTS). We got the factory one out, and wired the stereo to the wiring harness by instructions, but it will not turn on when turning the key to ACC or on. What can be the problem? It worked once with both red wires connected to both yellow wires.
Hi Kasey thanks for reading.
Do you have power and ground? Have you followed the 626 wiring diagram above? Do you have a multimeter? If not I would pick one up or rent one, and test your power and ground wires. Here’s a guide on how to get started :

Hope that helps!
Hi John, great article. I am having an issue with my 2001 626. I currently have an aftermarket stereo installed and recently all of the speakers simply stopped working. I have since replaced the entire stereo to a new one and I’m having the same issue of no sound. I have also recently removed the two speakers at the very rear of the vehicle as they deteriorated and were making a terrible noise prior to losing sound. Will this prove to be an issue simply having nothing connected to the two rear speaker cables?
Thanks in advanced!
Hey Nic, thanks for reading.
Losing sound from all your speakers doesn’t sound like your speakers went bad. I’m guessing it was a combination of other things. If you connect your rear Mazda 626 speakers, do they work or does sound come out of them?
