One of the most historic and epic stretches of road in the world, the Turnpike Hakone is one of the original drift roads in Japan. This road began life in 1962 and for many drifters and fans of drifting it’s known as the road that gave birth to drifting as a sport. Widely known and recognized for it’s beautiful scenery and lush views of Mt. Fuji, this stretch of road is breathtaking on it’s own merits.
Of course when you combine death defying speed in a Nissan GT-R, who has time for the sights? Toyo Tires has just put together it’s latest drift video of Turnpike Hakone, building on last year’s GT-R drift video.
This drift event was coordinated by Toyo Tires and Trust Racing, otherwise known as Greddy Performance. Featuring a Nissan GT-R piloted by Masato Kawabata and the JDM version of the Scion FR-S in the Toyota 86 driven by Ken Gushi, this epic video should be watched to be believed.
Held on November 18, 2015, the pair attack the hill and pilot both cars through the narrow passageway that is the Mazda Turnpike Hakone. Wrapped in sticky Toyo Proxes R1R tires, the pair make it look easy through the narrow roads and winding mountainside.
It was just last year when Mazda took over the naming rights to this legendary stretch of road. Overlooking part of Sagami Bay, the Turnpike Hakone or 箱根ターンパイク as it’s known in Japan is a road that needs no introduction.
