Acura Pauses MDX Type S Production With No Return Date

Acura will pause MDX Type S production after the 2026 model year, with no confirmed date for its return.

The Acura MDX Type S will enter an open-ended production pause after the 2026 model year, temporarily removing the brand’s 355-horsepower turbocharged performance SUV from the market.

Acura spokesperson Andrew Quillin confirmed the decision but provided no timetable for restarting production. Dealers are expected to have enough remaining inventory to continue selling the MDX Type S into early 2027, meaning the vehicle has not disappeared overnight—but Acura has not promised that it will return.

That distinction matters. The MDX Type S has not been formally killed, and the EPA has not banned it. Acura has decided to stop building the model while federal emissions requirements remain unsettled and the financial case for certifying its low-volume powertrain becomes increasingly difficult.

Apparently, 355 horsepower now requires premium fuel, four Brembo calipers and sufficient regulatory certainty.

What makes the MDX Type S different?

The regular MDX uses a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 producing 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. The Type S replaces that engine with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 rated at 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft.

According to Acura’s published MDX specifications, the Type S sends that output through a 10-speed automatic transmission and standard Super Handling All-Wheel Drive.

The performance package extends beyond installing a turbocharger and attaching another badge. Type S hardware includes:

  • Adaptive air suspension
  • Performance-tuned dampers
  • Four-piston Brembo front brakes
  • 21-inch wheels
  • Quad exhaust outlets
  • Type S-specific drive modes
  • Sport+ and Lift settings on Advance models
  • SH-AWD with active rear torque distribution

The turbocharged V6 gives the three-row crossover considerably more midrange torque than the standard MDX. SH-AWD can then distribute torque between the rear wheels to help the vehicle rotate under power instead of behaving like a front-heavy crossover that recently discovered a sport button.

Why is Acura pausing production?

The decision is connected to uncertainty surrounding the EPA’s Tier 4 criteria-pollutant standards for light- and medium-duty vehicles.

Those standards were finalized in 2024 and were originally scheduled to begin phasing in with the 2027 model year. In May 2026, however, the EPA proposed delaying the Tier 4 requirements by two model years, moving the initial compliance date to 2029.

The proposal would also delay changes to emissions-certification testing. The details appear in the Federal Register’s Tier 4 revision proposal.

The problem for Acura is that a proposal is not the same thing as a final rule. Product planning, engine calibration, supplier contracts and emissions certification must be decided years before a vehicle reaches a dealer.

An automaker cannot simply assume a regulatory delay will become final and continue producing a vehicle under whichever interpretation creates the least paperwork.

Why low-volume engines become vulnerable

Federal emissions certification involves much more than confirming that an engine passes a tailpipe test once.

Manufacturers must validate how a vehicle manages emissions throughout its operating range and useful life. That includes cold starts, catalyst performance, evaporative emissions, misfire detection, oxygen-sensor monitoring and the onboard diagnostics responsible for identifying failures.

Modern OBD software must determine whether emissions hardware continues operating correctly without constantly producing false trouble codes. Calibration engineers must establish diagnostic thresholds, test those thresholds under different environmental conditions and prove that the system can recognize failures within applicable limits.

That work is expensive even when the engine is mechanically unchanged.

The MDX Type S reportedly represents less than 10% of total MDX sales. Spreading certification and calibration costs across a relatively small number of vehicles makes the turbocharged V6 an easier target than the naturally aspirated engine used in higher-volume MDX trims.

The powertrain may remain perfectly capable of meeting customer expectations while becoming difficult to justify on a certification spreadsheet. Enthusiast models frequently disappear in that gap.

This is not an EPA ban

It would be easy to frame the story as federal regulators killing another performance vehicle, but that would overstate the available evidence.

The EPA proposed delaying the Tier 4 phase-in until model year 2029. Acura, meanwhile, made a business decision to pause a specialized, low-volume version of the MDX while the regulatory timeline remains unsettled.

No federal order specifically prohibits Acura from selling a turbocharged V6 SUV. Acura could invest in certifying the Type S under the applicable rules, revise the powertrain, develop a hybrid replacement or eventually resume production if the regulatory and financial cases improve.

The current answer is simply that Acura is not committing to any of those paths yet.

Could the MDX Type S return?

Acura has not announced when—or whether—the complete MDX Type S will return. The company could eventually pursue several options:

  • Re-certify the existing turbocharged 3.0-liter V6
  • Update its emissions hardware and diagnostic software
  • Introduce a hybrid performance powertrain
  • Move Type S styling and chassis features to another MDX trim
  • Leave the Type S name dormant until the next-generation MDX arrives

Some appearance and luxury equipment could migrate easily. Wheels, exterior trim, seats and interior features do not require an entire powertrain-certification program.

Moving the adaptive air suspension, Brembo brakes or Type S drive modes would be more meaningful. Those parts contribute to how the vehicle drives instead of merely ensuring the parking lot recognizes that someone selected the expensive version.

Acura’s performance lineup is getting thinner

The MDX Type S pause does not occur in isolation.

Acura previously ended production of the TLX sedan, including the TLX Type S. Production of the current RDX has also been paused ahead of a planned hybrid successor, while the company’s remaining lineup has become increasingly concentrated around crossovers.

Honda has also paused or dropped certain lower-volume manual-transmission configurations as it works through changing emissions-certification requirements.

The result is a lineup with fewer specialized combustion-powered performance models. That does not mean Acura is abandoning performance permanently, but buyers interested in a turbocharged Type S should not assume an equivalent replacement is already waiting behind the curtain.

What prospective buyers should know

Anyone specifically shopping for a new MDX Type S should start checking dealer inventory before remaining 2026 models become scarce.

A production pause does not invalidate factory warranties, parts support or dealer service. Existing Type S vehicles do not become unusable because assembly stops, and Acura has announced no recall or safety defect connected to this decision.

Buyers should still consider the normal ownership costs associated with a complex performance SUV: premium fuel, large tires, adaptive suspension, turbocharged-engine maintenance and sizable Brembo brake components.

The MDX Type S remains a practical three-row crossover with meaningful performance hardware. The problem is not that it suddenly became a bad vehicle. The problem is that Acura no longer knows when building more of them will make regulatory and financial sense.

For now, the 2026 model represents the final confirmed production run.
