First Generation Toyota Camry Stereo Wiring 1982-1986

The early Toyota Camry stereos were easy to remove and wire. These utilize a slightly modified single DIN setup for any aftermarket radio. When installing a new stereo or even a used one, you should not need a radio install kit.

There are multiple layouts to this oversized double DIN layout, but most aftermarket stereos will require a install kit regardless.

Seventh Generation Toyota Camry Stereo Wiring 2012+

The latest Camry can be difficult to install an aftermarket stereo into. Because most Camry stereos are connected to the infotainment system, you may require a bypass to get most things working correctly.

  1. Hi! My 2012 Camry filled with water due to a block ac drain. Since then the radio powers on, but no sound comes out. Could it be the factory amp located under the passenger side front seat? If so, how can I test the amp before springing for a new one?
    Thanks!

    • Hi Anita! Sorry to hear about your truck! Best results would be to test at the speaker itself. You can test the speaker using a 9 volt battery. Disconnect the speaker wires at the speaker and test to your 9V, you should hear static. Then try to measure the output from the stereo amplifier. Chances are though it’s the amp that’s fried. Best of luck and let us know how it turns out!

  2. HI HAVE A 2012 TOYOTA CAMRY SE LIMITED EDITION AND LAST WEEK MY SPEAKERS STOPPED WORKING EVERYTHING WORKS BUT THE ONLY THIS IS THAT THERE ARE NO SOUND COMING FROM THE SPEAKERS.

  3. Hey I got a 1997 Toyota Camry and my bf and are can’t figure out which wires are + and – to finish installing are Pinner CD radio. Can u plz help.

  4. I have a 2014 camry (non jbl) the rear speaker sound dual like there’s not enough power getting to them. I have changed out the factory speakers to after market speakers(better quality speakers) . The front speakers are working and sound 10x’s better then the back(no matter where you seat in the car. Could it possibly be the factory head unit? Maybe the wiring or harness connector to the rear speaker(I’m unsure at this point. All the connects look fine no damage that I have tested)? Any ideas or advise.

    • Hi Jerome, thanks for reading.

This is a common issue for many people, not just those who are upgrading their Camry stereo JBL or not. When you upgrade your head unit, often times your factory Camry speakers won’t be able to keep up, or operate on a different range of voltage. What ends up happening is your factory speakers sound bad, which is disappointing considering you just upgraded your Toyota stereo. Look into an amplifier and speaker setup and you’ll unlock your Camry stereo’s potential.

Hope that helps man! Good luck!

  5. I need to know OEM radio 2013 Camry after market Key 1 and Key 2 wheel streeing any one have diagram that i can cut the harnees and put color wires

  6. I have a 1986 Toyota Camry LE sedan. My original stereo system is a Technics AM FM cassette with built in equalizer. I’ve noticed that this system has an optional subwoofer on the floor under the instrument panel mount right behind the middle storage compartment. it’s mounted to the instrument panel brackets with speaker facing down close to the floor. The color of the subwoofer box is the same color as the interior of the car and has the original factory connector to it. I installed an aftermarket radio in my car using a wiring adapter kit but now my subwoofer doesn’t work. I’ve been looking at the wiring diagrams but it doesn’t show the subwoofer. If I disconnect the subwoofer, my front speakers doesn’t work. I would like the subwoofer to work like before but I’m at a loss of what to do. The name on the subwoofer label says Matsushita which is now Panasonic.

    • Hi Ron, wow you’ve got an interesting project there!

Unfortunately, I’m not going to have information on your Matsushita subwoofer but we can still work this out. First, do you have a multimeter? if not go out and grab one or rent one, they are relatively cheap and easy to use.

      https://my.prostreetonline.com/2014/10/14/how-to-use-a-multimeter/

Trace back the subwoofer, where do these wires terminate? is there a factory amp or another body control unit in place or do the wires go into the stereo and head unit? If you unplug the Toyota subwoofer, will any speakers work at all?

If tracing these wires back is too hard, read the wire resistance on the subwoofer from your wiring harness, you should be able to find which wire is what from a process of elimination.

Start there, and let me know! Hope that helps!

  7. Where is the remote wire on my factory radio on 2018 Toyota camry. I’m trying to connect an amp and I can’t find the remote wire .

  8. ion but mostly static.2011 camry base rqdio. I have installed a SJOYBRING JOY-M005D. SEEMED TO GO OK WITH THE METRA HARNESSES. MY PROBLEM: THE ANTENNA DOESN’T SEEM TO BE WORKING. CARPLAY WORKS FINE BUT THHE “RADIO” DOES NOT. I get one very local station but mostly static. Is there some trick to putting in the antenna — the plug size seems to be correct?

    • Hi Ken, are you certain you have the mono antenna wire connected and seated properly?? If so I would test the antenna harness itself to see if there’s a break that’s causing your Camry stereo problems. Hope that helps!
