P0222 – Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch “B” Circuit Low

P0222 – Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch “B” Circuit Low

Issues with your throttle pedal or vehicle throttle body can be detrimental to your gas mileage and even dangerous. If your check engine light is on, use a scan tool to retrieve your On-Board Diagnostic trouble code. If this code comes back as a P0222, you will need to take steps to fix P0222 trouble code problems.

Because your throttle is responsible for allowing air into your engine, your ECU needs accurate information from your throttle sensor. When your ECU does not get the information expected, it’s nearly impossible for your engine to function.

What Does P0222 Code Mean?

The OBDII fault code definition for this code is Throttle Position Sensor/Switch B Circuit Low Input. This means that the voltage output from the Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch to the PCM is lower than what your ECU is expecting.

The Throttle Position Sensor is located on the throttle body. For owners of vehicles with electronic throttles, the TPS is integrated into the Accelerator Pedal Assembly.

These sensors provide precise input to your vehicle so that your ECU can deliver the right amount of fuel and orchestrate combustion events.

How to Fix P0222 trouble codes

Because there are many components to inspect or test, you are best served by getting your hands on a multimeter. If you need help on how to fix P0222 issues, here are a few guides on testing your throttle body.

As the Throttle Position Sensor is rotated from its base resting position to full acceleration, it sends a decreasing voltage signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This decreasing or increasing voltage signal is used by the PCM to manage the Air Fuel Ratio and Spark Timing of the engine as well as other emissions system components.

Symptoms of P0222

  • engine won’t start
  • acceleration problems
  • unpredictable throttle response

Common P0222 Problems

When it comes to clear your check engine light, there can be many issues that can arise from you trying to fix P0222 trouble codes. Depending on the age of your vehicle, here are just a few of the problems you may encounter.

  • carbon buildup on throttle body
  • buildup or damage to throttle plate
  • incorrect throttle body adjustments
  • Corroded or damaged throttle body sensor wiring
  • Bad ECU
