If you own a OBDI Acura or Honda and your check engine light is on, you need a way to check it. Because your vehicle doesn’t come with an OBDII port for you to tap into using a scan tool, you need another method to retrieve your Honda Trouble Codes. Just because you own a OBD1 Honda doesn’t mean you don’t have a diagnostic port. You can easily read your Honda trouble codes with just a single wire.

HondadlcThis is typically done by jumping the two pin blue harness that’s nearby your ECU. Once you jumper this connector you’ll see your Honda check engine light flash on and off.

You will be interpreting your Honda trouble codes through a process that will remind you of Morse code. Single digit Honda trouble codes 1-9 will be shown as individual blinks of your Honda check engine light.

Honda trouble codes 10 and up will have one long blink and several shorter blinks. Long blinks of your Honda check engine light on signify 10, while short flashes signify 1. Using this method you can easily determine the Honda Trouble Codes that are causing your issues.

Tips to read your Honda trouble codes

  • Use a small wire – Don’t shove or force a large gauge wire into the DLC port connector.
  • Be patient – There may be more than one code, so make sure to be patient.
  • Double check – Reading Honda trouble codes doesn’t take a lot of time, make sure to double check to get the code correct.
