Working on your own Tesla isn’t something that most people do. Given that fact, there’s no wonder why a DIY Tesla Build hasn’t been very popular. In fact efforts to build a Tesla have resulted in a loss for most owners, that or a very expensive lawn ornament.

With so much control in the hands of the manufacturer, there is very little in the way of rights for owners.

This could be changing however, as Tesla continues to come under fire for the “right to repair”

Tesla has recently released a complete parts guide available to everyone online. While this doesn’t mean you can up and order anything you want, it’s still a significant step in the right direction. That’s right, every Tesla up to and including the Model 3 which brings into question;is it worth it to build your own Tesla??

Tesla Build – Worth It?

Whether or not you are looking into a Tesla build or not, it’s not just as easy as it seems online. The road to building your own Tesla is fraught with dangers and potential pitfalls that could end up costing you dearly.

Considering your own Tesla build? Want to know if you can build your own Tesla cheap? Here are a few things that you must consider before trying to build a Tesla on your own.

You can’t order parts on your own

Before you start browsing junkyards and wreckers, remember that you can’t just up and order your own parts from Tesla. This means a Tesla build will require a donor car.

Experience isn’t required but it’s recommended

Many enthusiasts may think that a floor jack and a few jackstands is all you need for a Tesla build. While you could possibly manage, it’s definitely not something the average shadetree mechanic should attempt.

Automotive lifts and power tools is highly recommended, especially when it comes to the Tesla batteries. Because of the design, layout and the cumbersome floor pan alignment, it’s not a walk in the park.

Software is not included

Even after you complete your Tesla build, there’s always the impossible task of managing the operating system. Because the Tesla build of your choice is completely managed by the onboard computer, this is no small task.

If you have to ask how much it costs…

Last but not least, any consideration for a DIY Tesla project has to start and end with cost. Because of the inherent price challenges, not everyone can complete or even start a Tesla DIY project.

It really comes down to simple math. Whether you are talking a harness, computer or body panel, you will need another car. This is already assuming there’s nothing wrong with the wrecked or flooded Tesla part you are swapping.

This in and of itself is a huge showstopper for many DIY Tesla builds. Still this probably won’t stop enthusiasts like Rich Rebuilds and nor should it. Innovators like Rich and others online are helping pave the way for a better tomorrow for all Tesla owners.
