Like anything that deals with fuel in your Ford, the Taurus Fuel Injector can become clogged or fail over time. There are contaminants and debris that can work it’s way past your Taurus fuel filter, and eventually lead to your injector becoming inoperable. When this occurs there’s no doubt that your Taurus will run poorly. Your idle will suffer and engine misfire could occur, leading to other parts of your Ford failing.
The Taurus Fuel injector could also fail from a breakdown of the internal coil. When this happens it’s not an issue of your injector clogging but rather failing. Today I’ll be showing you how to tell the difference in a 2005 Ford Taurus with the 3.0 liter Duratec engine in it.
The way to test your injector is easy to do with this DIY tutorial. You’ll need a digital multimeter to complete this How To Guide. This tool allows you to read the internal resistance of your fuel injector to see if the windings are still good. If the test comes back positive and within specification, that means your Taurus Fuel Injector is clogged.
Symptoms of a failed Taurus Fuel Injector
When this injector goes out you’re going to suspect something right away. One of the earliest signs of a trouble is a OBDII check engine code. When this check engine light triggers on in your Ford Taurus, you’ve got to use the right scan tool to retrieve the code. Here’s some other common problems when your fuel injector fails on you.
- Poor fuel economy
- Engine misfire
- Hesitation
- Poor acceleration
- Check Engine Light ON
When any of issues are plaguing your Ford Taurus, use this 3.0 liter Duratec How To guide to test the injectors one at a time.
Testing the Duratec 3.0L Fuel Injector Resistance
To test your Taurus Fuel Injector all you need to do is disconnect the fuel injector harness from each injector. Use a notepad to write down your results from each cylinder, just as a guide. Now turn the knob on your multimeter to read resistance or the OHMS position.
Probe both leads of the fuel injector with the multimeter, and read the internal resistance. If your Taurus Fuel Injector is still good, the reading should fall between 11-19 Ω ohms.
If your Taurus Fuel Injector does not read between this range, it’s kaput and you will need a replacement injector. If the resistance test comes back with a value between this range however, chances are your injector is clogged. Check your fuel filter or send your injector out to be cleaned and flow matched professionally.
