How to find the bad fuel injector

If your Civic engine is running rough or misfiring, there’s an easy way to figure out what cylinder is having an issue. Start your engine and carefully unplug one fuel injector at a time, starting with cylinder #1. Observe the change in the idle or how the engine behaves. If the behavior or idle does not dip or change, chances are that is the problem fuel injector, and you should start there.

Either way, you should take the time to measure all four Honda injectors to make sure they are in proper working order. If the internal resistance in any of your fuel injectors is not within factory specification, it’s time for a replacement before the condition worsens.

How to measure resistance in your Civic fuel injector

The first order of business is to disconnect all the fuel injector clips on your injectors. On most OBDII Civics, this is fairly simple to do. For OBDI vehicles, it will help to have a pick to help pry open the metal tabs on the injector clips.

How To Change your Honda Civic Timing Belt

Get your multimeter ready along with a piece of paper so that you can record the values you get from each cylinder. Start at cylinder #1 ( closest to the timing belt ) and test your way down the engine until you are done. This is the big part of our how to test Honda Civic injectors guide, and here’s how to measure the resistance in your Honda fuel injector.

  1. Put multimeter into Ω Ohms mode
  2. Touch leads to injector terminals
  3. Note internal resistance of your Civic injector
  4. Record injector value move to next injector

The results of your how to test Honda Civic injectors test should net a resistance range between 5-7 Ohms. Make sure the leads of your multimeter do not touch each other for an accurate reading. Don’t be afraid to re-test should you find yourself doubting yourself. Remember this test should be conducted on an engine that’s warm.
