Changing your water pump can be a job that you might have to undertake, but it’s usually a part of your timing belt maintenance. When changing the timing belt in your 1.8 liter DOHC Acura Integra, you should always change your water pump. Today we’ll be showing you how to quickly change and service your water pump in a B18B1, to help you resolve your overheating Integra.
The part number in question we’ll be replacing is 19200-P75-003 for a non VTEC version of Honda’s popular DOHC engine. It can also be found under 19200-PT5-000 or 19200-PT5-003 for a Acura Integra LS or B20 for a CR-V. Jack up the front of your Acura Integra, and secure the back wheels by raising your ebrake and using chocks to prevent the rear wheels from moving. Drain the radiator of all the coolant, and then disconnect the upper radiator hose that runs to the back of your motor.
Next, you’ll be pulling out all of the spark plug wires and then undoing the 12mm bolts that hold your Acura distributor in place. Remove the dizzy by taking out the 12mm bolts (there’s three total) and remove the entire unit. Do not bother disconnecting the spark plug wires so that you don’t have to mess with the firing order.
Now with the distributor taken out, you can go ahead and loosen the 10mm nuts that hold your valve cover in place.
Remove all the 10mm nuts to your valve cover, and remove the valve cover entirely. If you have replacement spark plug tube seals and another valve cover seal, discard your old units.
Locate your cruise control box and remove the 10mm bolts that hold it to the chassis.
Unplug the cruise control box and flip it up to rest it against your hood support or the top of your intake manifold. Now with the cruise control box moved, you can access your front motor mount.
Remove the valve cover so that you can gain access to the mid cover on your DOHC B series engine. Remove the mid timing cover by removing the long 10mm bolts that run through the mid cover. Once you have the mid cover removed, you can access the motor mount.
Now remove the driver side wheel from your Acura Integra. Once you’ve got it removed you can see the lower splash guide to your B18B.
Take out the plastic push clips that hold this splash guard in place. Once you have both of these tabs pulled out, you can push the plastic guard down and away. Now using a piece of wood, support the bottom of your DOHC B series engine by placing an automotive jack under your oil pan. Use the wood to disperse the load evenly, so that you aren’t crushing or damaging your oil pan or oil pump pickup tube.
Begin by unclipping the B18 power steering reservoir, to gain access to your motor mount bolt. Make sure the jack is pushing up on the motor slightly, and then undo the 17mm bolt that runs through the middle of your motor mount. With the center bolt removed, you can jack up your B18 slightly so that you can gain access to the motor mount bolts. The inner bolt is a stud, and it may come out with your 14mm bolt so take care not to cross thread your mount.
Now keeping that tension on your motor, head back under your car to remove the 2 14mm bolts that run through your B18 air conditioning mount. This mount has both 14mm bolts running through the bracket to the underside of the frame rail. Remove these two 14mm bolts, and then you can undo the 19mm nut on the mount along with all the bushings.
Slide off this air conditioning mount, and set this to the side. If your mount is torn apart, or your bushings require replacement use a new mount part number 608893.
Now you are ready to start clearing away the drive belts on your DOHC Integra engine. Using your floor jack, slightly lower your engine until you can reach the air conditioning pulley and arm. Loosen the tension to your power steering pump and your air conditioning pulley using the adjustment brackets on the front of the engine.
Loosen the 12mm bolt that runs through your alternator and into the alternator bracket. Pull your alternator towards you to loosen the belt. Your drive belts should now be loosened. Now head back down underneath your car to start undoing the belts completely.
There’s a 14mm special alignment bolt that runs through this main air conditioning tensioner. Loosen this bolt, and then swing the entire arm and pulley upwards and out of the way.
With this arm swung up and out of place, you can remove the drive belts from the front of your Integra. Now you can remove your crank pulley and the lower timing cover that must come off in order for you to service your water pump.
Remove the plastic plug on the front of your engine cover, and loosen the 14mm bolt underneath this plug.
With the B18B timing belt loose now, you can slide it off your engine when you take off your crank pulley.
Use an air gun to remove the crank pulley, and carefully store your keyway or woodruff key as to not lose it. Now remove the lower timing cover by loosening the 10mm bolts that run through the plastic.
Now slide off the lower timing cover to expose the front of your B18 engine. Head back up top and start loosening the water pump bolts, these are also 10mm bolts.
Remove all the 10mm bolts that hold the water pump in place. Prepare for a little bit of coolant to spill out of the housing once you remove your water pump.
Remove your old water pump and discard the complete unit. Replace with a new 19 tooth water pump for non VTEC engines, and a 22 tooth water pump for VTEC models. The Honda part number for this water pump is 19200-P75-003 and it can be found under 19200-PT5-000 and 19200-PT5-003 as well.
Make sure to clean the housing and dry it so that your new water pump will install nicely. Apply a light film of gasket maker to prevent leaks from your new water pump.
If your valve cover allows for cam gear adjustment, you can go ahead and reinstall your B series valve cover now. Make sure that the mating surfaces of your cylinder head are dry and completely clean to prevent B18 valve cover leaks or cam gear seal leaks.
To retime and reinstall your water pump on your B18, you’ve got to reinstall your timing belt guide as well as your crank pulley bolt to make sure your engine is properly timed. For more information, check our How To DIY Timing belt on a B series.
