After you’ve serviced your VQ35DE electronic throttle actuator, you will need to perform a series of programming tests to help the VQ35 ECU “learn” positioning. If you need to test your electronic throttle control unit, check out our How To Service a VQ35 Throttle Control Guide here.
We’ll be showing you how to program the position learning part of your Nissan or Infiniti ECU. To demonstrate this procedure, we’ll be showing you how to program your Nissan ECU on a 2006 Nissan 350Z Roadster.
If you are visiting us from our Part 1 section of How To Service your VQ35 throttle, you will need to program or relearn your pedal position since you disconnected the ECU.
What is the Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning Mode?
Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning is an operation to learn the fully released position of the accelerator pedal by monitoring the accelerator pedal position sensor output signal.
It must be performed each time harness connector of accelerator pedal position sensor or ECM is disconnected.
How to Program your VQ35 throttle
- Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released.
- Turn ignition switch ON and wait at least 2 seconds.
- Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
- Turn ignition switch ON and wait at least 2 seconds.
- Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds
How To Program Your VQ35 Throttle Valve Closed Position
Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning is an operation to learn the fully closed position of the throttle valve by monitoring the throttle position sensor output signal. It must be performed each time harness connector of electric throttle control actuator or ECM is disconnected.
How To Program Your VQ35 Closed Throttle Position
- Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released.
- Turn ignition switch ON.
- Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds. I
- Make sure that throttle valve moves during above 10 seconds by confirming the operating sound.
How To Program Your VQ35 Idle Air Volume
Idle Air Volume Learning is an operation to learn the idle air volume that keeps each engine within the specific range. It must be performed under any of the following conditions: Each time electric throttle control actuator or ECM is replaced or disconnected, or there’s a problem with the VQ35 Idle. This procedure is also required when ignition timing is adjusted or incorrect.
How To Program your VQ35 Idle
Before performing Idle Air Volume Learning, make sure that all of the following conditions are satisfied. Learning will be cancelled if any of the following conditions are missed for even a moment.
- Battery voltage: More than 12.9V (At idle)
- Engine coolant temperature: 70 – 100°C (158 – 212°F)
- Park/neutral position (PNP) switch: ON
- Electric load switch: OFF – (Turn off Air conditioner, headlamp, rear window defogger)
- Vehicle speed: Stopped
- Engine and transmission have warmed up
Nissan typically calls for use of the CONSULT-II to program your idle speed. If you do not have this handy, you can use a stopwatch to time the intervals in question. The programming part of the idle speed section is required as stated above, and you are aiming for this idle speed.
- Automatic Transmission – 650 ± 50 rpm (in P or N position)
- Manual Transmission – 650 ± 50 rpm (in P or N position)
You will also need to complete the Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning and Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning sections found earlier in this How To Program your VQ35 Accelerator Pedal Guide.
- Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
- Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch ON and wait 3 seconds.
- Repeat the following procedure quickly five times within 5 seconds.
- Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
- Fully release the accelerator pedal.
- Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 20 seconds until the MIL stops blinking and turned ON.
- Fully release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the MIL turned ON.
- Start engine and let it idle.
- Wait 20 seconds.
- Rev up the engine two or three times and make sure that idle speed and ignition timing are within the
specifications.
If you are having problems programming your VQ35 idle air control, or throttle body, make sure that your base ignition timing is properly set to 15° ± 5° BTDC (in P or N position).
