So what do you get when you combine the functionality and practicality of a hatchback, with the uncompromising performance and luxury of AMG?

Hatchbacks have long been the hallmark of Japanese performance and quirky styling, but have recently enjoyed a resurgence as smaller and cheaper modes of transportation are becoming more and more popular. From the outrageously popular and economic Honda Civic hatchbacks of days past or the utilitarian Element and Matrix, Japanese manufacturers have been at the forefront in the hatchback segment.
Economy, gas mileage and functionality have been pillars of the hatchback segment, but Mercedes Benz is not only knocking down these stereotypes but they may be forging a new direction for these bubbled subcompacts with the A45 AMG.
The performance orientated luxury hatchback is packing 360 bhp and up to 332 lb fts of torque, squeezed from the AMG turbocharged 2.0 liter 4 cylinder. These power numbers make the A45 AMG the most powerful production 4 cylinder in the world! Our friends over at GT Channel break down the hatchback’s most impressive stats :

Not only does this make the A45 AMG one of the hottest hatches that we’ve ever seen, it’s also very green and very responsible, adhering to the EU6 emissions standards overseas.
Unfortunately as is the case with almost anything cool and automotive, the A45 is not slated to hit US shores quite yet. However with Mercedes Benz actively looking to build upon their “Next Generation Compact Car” as the 45 year old auto manufacturer terms them, the luxury performance hatchback could make a US debut.
According to Mercedes Benz the A45 AMG will serve as a foundation to springboard 2 more high-performance premium automobiles with deadlines that are fast approaching. Their new dedication to smaller, lighter and (relatively speaking of course) cheaper architecture could lead to more firsts from Affalterbach.
The high end level of power the A45 presents combined with the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system ensures a dynamic driving experience as AMG blends the years of motorsports experience into the little hatchback. One thing is for sure though, with the ability to go from zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds and a top speed governed at 156mph, this hatchback is one hot ticket!
