Do not automatically replace the camshaft actuator or timing chain.

P0084 is first and foremost an electrical circuit code. The repair may involve a failed solenoid, corroded connector, broken wire, blown fuse, failed relay or PCM driver.

Variable valve timing is a sophisticated combination of electronics, hydraulics and mechanical camshaft control.

Sometimes the entire system still stops working because one connector was not fully clicked into place—which is the sort of humble little failure that keeps expensive engineering from getting too confident.
