Volkswagen has revealed the first rear-wheel-drive GTI in the badge’s 50-year history—and it is also the most powerful production GTI yet.
The 2027 Volkswagen ID.3 GTI sends 240 kW, or approximately 322 hp, and 402 lb-ft of torque to its rear axle. Volkswagen estimates it will reach 62 mph in 5.6 seconds while offering up to 373 miles of range under the European WLTP testing cycle.
It is unquestionably quick, but the horsepower number is not the most interesting part. Volkswagen is attempting to preserve GTI character after removing the turbocharged engine, dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel-drive layout that have defined the modern badge.
The company’s answer involves rear-wheel drive, electronically controlled dampers, progressive steering and enough software-defined driving modes to make the original 1976 Golf GTI wonder when suspension tuning became an operating system.
2027 Volkswagen ID.3 GTI specifications
The ID.3 GTI is based on Volkswagen’s rear-drive electric ID.3 platform and uses a single motor mounted at the rear axle. It replaces the existing ID.3 GTX Performance at the top of the rear-wheel-drive ID.3 lineup.
According to the official Volkswagen ID.3 GTI announcement, its preliminary specifications include:

Volkswagen has not announced final pricing or confirmed whether the ID.3 GTI will be offered in the United States. The regular ID.3 has historically remained outside the American market, so a U.S. launch should not be assumed simply because the GTI badge is familiar here.
The horsepower figure needs a small translation
Volkswagen rates the ID.3 GTI at 326 metric horsepower, commonly abbreviated as PS. Converted to mechanical horsepower, the figure is approximately 322 hp.
That does not make the ID.3 GTI less powerful. It prevents two measurement systems from being treated as though they are identical because both numbers appeared in a press release wearing similar clothing.
The 402 lb-ft torque figure is arguably more useful. An electric motor can deliver peak torque immediately, giving the ID.3 GTI strong response without waiting for engine speed, turbocharger boost or a transmission downshift.
Its estimated 5.6-second sprint to 62 mph is respectable rather than shocking. Plenty of dual-motor electric cars are quicker in a straight line. Volkswagen appears more interested in how the car responds through corners than in winning another stoplight statistic nobody can repeatedly use without reorganizing the groceries.
The first rear-wheel-drive GTI changes the formula
Every combustion-powered Golf GTI has used front-wheel drive. That configuration helped make the GTI affordable, practical and compact, but it also asked the front tires to handle steering, acceleration and much of the braking load.
The ID.3 GTI sends all propulsion torque to the rear wheels. Its front tires can concentrate on steering while the rear axle handles acceleration.
That separation can provide several benefits:
- Reduced torque steer
- Cleaner steering feedback under acceleration
- Better traction while exiting corners
- Greater ability to rotate the chassis with throttle
- More balanced front-tire loading
Rear-wheel drive does not automatically make a car entertaining. A heavy battery, conservative stability control, numb steering or overheated tires can remove excitement from any drivetrain layout with impressive efficiency.
Still, moving the driven wheels rearward gives Volkswagen a promising foundation. Fifty years of front-wheel-drive GTI tradition has been respectfully thanked for its service and shown the rear axle.
Volkswagen is tuning behavior through software
The ID.3 GTI receives a dedicated GTI driving mode that coordinates the accelerator response, steering, suspension and stability-control systems. Standard Launch Control manages wheel slip during hard acceleration.
Volkswagen’s DCC adaptive suspension continuously adjusts damper behavior based on vehicle movement, road conditions and the selected driving mode. Progressive steering changes the steering ratio as the wheel is turned, reducing the amount of steering input required during tight corners.
These systems give engineers considerable control over how the ID.3 GTI responds without replacing mechanical hardware. The same dampers can provide a more compliant street setting and firmer body control in a performance mode.
This is where the electric GTI will either establish its own identity or become a collection of familiar badges attached to a fast ID.3. Power is easy to quantify. Steering response, brake-pedal consistency, body control and sustained thermal performance require actual driving.
Volkswagen has released provisional specifications—not an independent road or track test.

The battery offers strong range but adds mass
The ID.3 GTI uses a 79-kWh usable battery. Volkswagen projects up to 601 kilometers, or approximately 373 miles, under the WLTP cycle.
WLTP figures are generally more optimistic than U.S. EPA estimates and should not be treated as a direct prediction of American highway range. Temperature, speed, elevation, tire choice, cabin heating and aggressive driving can all reduce real-world range.
Volkswagen lists preliminary energy consumption of 14.5 kWh per 100 kilometers. That figure is considerably higher than the experimental Volkswagen Mission Efficiency prototype, which demonstrated what is possible when nearly every design decision is subordinated to aerodynamics.
The GTI has a different assignment. Its wider performance tires, aggressive bodywork, cooling requirements and higher motor output all consume energy. Grip and efficiency remain friendly until somebody installs 20-inch wheels and asks both to report for track duty.
Charging peaks at 183 kW
Volkswagen says the ID.3 GTI can charge at up to 183 kW from a compatible DC fast charger. Under suitable conditions, the company estimates a 10–80% recharge in approximately 29 minutes.
Actual charging speed depends on several variables:
- Battery temperature
- Starting state of charge
- Charger output
- Thermal conditioning
- Ambient temperature
- Battery-protection limits
- Charging-curve calibration
The maximum number is only one point on the charging curve. A car that briefly touches a high peak can finish a charging session more slowly than one that sustains a lower rate for longer.
For a performance EV, thermal management also affects more than charging. The battery, motor and inverter must remain within their temperature limits during repeated acceleration, high-speed driving and regenerative braking.
The unanswered question is not whether the ID.3 GTI can produce 322 hp once. It is how consistently it can maintain output after several hard laps or repeated acceleration runs.
ID.3 GTI versus Golf GTI Edition 50
The ID.3 GTI arrives during the GTI badge’s 50th anniversary. That makes comparison with the Golf GTI Edition 50 unavoidable.
The Golf remains the traditional interpretation: turbocharged four-cylinder power, front-wheel drive and the mechanical sensation of an engine working through a geared transmission. The ID.3 GTI uses immediate electric torque, rear-wheel drive and a single-speed reduction gear.
The ID.3 GTI is more powerful on paper, although its battery will likely make it considerably heavier. Volkswagen has not yet published a final curb weight, so declaring it the faster car through every type of corner would be premature.
The two models represent different engineering priorities:

The ID.3 GTI does not need to imitate a Golf’s exhaust note to justify itself. It needs responsive steering, predictable brake behavior and a chassis that remains enjoyable after the novelty of immediate torque wears off.
Classic styling cues survive the drivetrain change
Volkswagen has carried several traditional GTI details into the electric model.
The ID.3 GTI receives a red grille-line treatment, GTI badging, a unique front fascia, 20-inch wheels and an interior with red accents. Tornado Red—long associated with earlier Golf GTIs—returns as an available exterior color.
The cabin includes sport seats, GTI-specific displays and a steering wheel with a red 12-o’clock marker. These touches establish continuity, although illuminated trim and upholstery cannot manufacture chassis character by themselves.
The promising parts remain underneath: rear-wheel drive, adaptive dampers, progressive steering and dedicated stability-control calibration.
Is the electric ID.3 a real GTI?
That answer will require driving it.
The specifications establish a credible performance foundation. The ID.3 GTI has enough power, a sensible rear-drive layout, a usable battery and chassis hardware intended to do more than produce an attractive launch photograph.
What Volkswagen has not demonstrated independently is how the car handles repeated hard use, how much it weighs, how naturally the controls communicate and whether its GTI mode adds meaningful capability rather than louder graphics.
The ID.3 GTI should not be dismissed simply because it lacks an exhaust system. It also should not inherit 50 years of credibility before anyone has tested the brakes after several hard laps.
For now, Volkswagen has built the most powerful GTI and the first one driven from the rear. That is enough to make it mechanically interesting—even if the traditional GTI formula has been rearranged so thoroughly that the front wheels may need time to process their reduced workload.
