The 443-HP BMW M350 Replaces the M340i—and Its Drift Mode Arrives Later

The 2027 BMW M350 xDrive combines a provisional 443 hp with standard all-wheel drive and a rear-drive mode scheduled for release in 2027.

The 2027 BMW M350 xDrive proves that BMW is not finished developing fast gasoline-powered 3 Series sedans. It also proves that buying the entire car no longer guarantees receiving all of its advertised tricks on delivery day.

BMW’s new M350 xDrive replaces the M340i as the quickest and most powerful combustion-engine 3 Series below the M3. Its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six and 48-volt mild-hybrid system produce a provisional 443 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive are standard.

BMW says the M350 can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 4.1 seconds and reach an electronically limited 155 mph. It will also offer a new function called “Drift Moment,” which sends the engine’s power exclusively to the rear wheels.

There is one small software-shaped qualification: Drift Moment will not be available when production begins. BMW plans to activate it during 2027 through a Remote Software Upgrade, including on M350s already delivered to customers.

Even oversteer has joined the downloadable-content economy.

BMW published those figures while the new 3 Series was completing final driving-dynamics testing at the company’s Miramas proving grounds in southern France. Because the car remains in its development phase, BMW correctly labels its output and acceleration figures as provisional. Treat them as serious factory targets, not final certification numbers carved into a cylinder head.

The inline-six survives the next-generation 3 Series

BMW will sell the next combustion-powered 3 Series alongside the fully electric i3. Four- and six-cylinder gasoline engines remain part of the plan, and both use 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance.

The M350 is the only combustion-powered model in the new 3 Series range confirmed with six cylinders. BMW identifies it as a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six, continuing the basic engine layout that made the M340i one of the strongest everyday performance sedans available.

The outgoing M340i produces 386 hp and uses an integrated 48-volt starter-generator. The M350’s provisional 443 hp represents a 57-hp increase, placing it much closer to full M-car territory.

That does not make the M350 an M3. The current rear-wheel-drive M3 produces 473 hp and remains available with a six-speed manual transmission. The M3 Competition increases output to 503 hp, while the M3 Competition xDrive reaches 523 hp. Those cars also receive more specialized M chassis, cooling, braking and drivetrain hardware.

The M350 instead occupies the traditional M Performance middle ground: considerably more serious than a styling package, but tuned to survive commuting, weather and ordinary roads without treating every expansion joint as a personal insult.

The M350’s 443-hp figure exceeds the 425 hp produced by the original F80-generation M3 when it arrived for the 2015 model year. Horsepower inflation has now reached the point where yesterday’s M3 output lives in today’s not-quite-an-M3.

Peak output is only part of the distinction, however. A full M model is defined by its complete thermal, structural and chassis package—not merely a dyno number and enough badges to make the trunk lid nervous.

How BMW’s Drift Moment works

The M350 uses BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system and a multidisc transfer clutch to distribute power between the axles. Under normal conditions, that system can vary torque distribution to balance traction, stability and performance.

Drift Moment changes the strategy. With the function selected through the central display and Dynamic Stability Control switched off, BMW says engine power is sent completely to the rear wheels. The M Sport differential then manages torque across the rear axle.

This is not the same as mechanically removing the front driveshafts. The front driveline hardware remains in the car; the electronically controlled transfer system simply stops sending engine torque forward while the mode is active.

That distinction matters for tuners and owners. The behavior depends on software, control-module communication, clutch management and stability-system status. It is a coordinated vehicle function rather than a simple dashboard switch attached directly to a transfer case.

Why is the drift mode arriving after the car?

BMW has not described Drift Moment as a paid subscription. It says the feature will be made available during 2027 and activated by Remote Software Upgrade in cars that have already been delivered.

That is an important difference. Based on the current announcement, early M350 buyers should receive the function through an update rather than purchasing it separately. BMW has not yet provided a firm release date, regional availability list or complete activation requirements.

The larger concern is philosophical. The drivetrain hardware will apparently be present, but one of the car’s headline performance functions will depend on future software.

Owners are therefore being asked to trust that BMW will finish, approve and distribute the feature as promised. Delayed software is familiar in consumer electronics. It becomes more consequential when the software controls torque distribution in a 443-hp sedan.

The upside is that BMW can refine the calibration before releasing it and deploy improvements without requiring a dealer visit. The downside is that the delivered car will initially be less capable than the one described in the announcement.

Performance cars used to arrive complete and become modified later. The M350 arrives modified and becomes complete later.

Chassis changes go beyond a software trick

The downloadable drift mode will attract the headlines, but BMW has made meaningful physical changes to the new 3 Series.

The chassis uses a longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks. High-preload anti-roll-bar mounts are intended to improve body control, while revised steering and an upgraded integrated braking system contribute to the new driving-dynamics package.

The platform retains a double-joint strut front suspension and five-link rear layout. Standard models receive newly developed lift-related dampers, while the M350 includes adaptive M suspension, variable sport steering and the M Sport differential.

BMW will also offer 20-inch performance tires measuring 245/35R20 at the front and 275/30R20 at the rear. Those sizes provide a staggered setup with considerably more rear tire, although final U.S. equipment and option packaging have not been announced.

These components matter more than the Drift Moment party trick during ordinary fast driving. A useful performance car needs predictable damping, controlled body motion, repeatable brakes and sensible differential calibration before it needs to convert its rear tires into atmospheric content.

The BMW Driving Stack controls the experience

BMW says the new combustion-powered 3 Series uses an updated electronics and software architecture called the BMW Driving Stack. This integrated system coordinates functions related to engine management, braking, stability control and all-wheel drive.

The arrangement is different from the “Heart of Joy” central computer developed for BMW’s electric Neue Klasse architecture, but the goal is similar: combine vehicle-dynamics functions so the car responds as one system instead of several controllers negotiating through a conference call.

That integration can improve response and consistency. It also means more vehicle behavior is defined by proprietary software. For aftermarket tuners, the important unanswered questions concern module security, calibration access, update compatibility and what happens when modified software encounters a future factory download.

BMW has not announced those policies for the M350. Claims that it will be either tuner-friendly or completely locked down would be premature. What we know is that power distribution, stability management and the rear-drive function are closely integrated—and the factory intends to update at least one of them remotely.

What BMW still needs to confirm

BMW has disclosed enough information to make the M350 interesting, but several important details remain missing:

The development car is real, the inline-six is confirmed and the production schedule begins in the second half of 2026. The remaining numbers should be treated as provisional until BMW completes certification and publishes U.S.-market specifications.

Final verdict: real hardware, unfinished software

The 2027 BMW M350 xDrive looks like a substantial successor to the M340i. It keeps the turbocharged inline-six, raises provisional output to 443 hp and adds standard hardware that matters: adaptive suspension, an active rear differential, variable steering and a wider chassis.

It also brings the M Performance 3 Series remarkably close to earlier M3 output while remaining positioned as the more livable daily driver. Buyers who want a manual transmission or the full competition package will still need an M3. Buyers who want strong six-cylinder performance with standard all-wheel drive may find the M350 difficult to ignore.

The downloadable drift mode is both clever and slightly absurd. Software allows one drivetrain to provide secure all-wheel-drive traction and rear-drive behavior. But selling the feature before it is ready asks customers to purchase a promise alongside the car.

BMW has built a 443-hp sedan capable of becoming rear-wheel drive. It will become capable of admitting that sometime in 2027.
