Toyota is developing a new mid-engine sports car, and the latest report claims the long-awaited MR2 successor could reach showrooms in 2028 with all-wheel drive and more than 400 horsepower.
That is the encouraging part.
The important disclaimer is that Toyota still has not officially named the car MR2, announced a production date or released final specifications. The development program is real. Several of the most exciting details remain reported rather than confirmed.
According to a new Carscoops report, citing Autocar, Toyota’s future mid-engine coupe is targeting a 2028 market arrival. It could use the company’s compact G20E 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, make approximately 400 to 450 horsepower in road form and send power to all four wheels.
The car may also arrive without a Toyota badge. Gazoo Racing is becoming a more independent performance brand, raising the possibility that the coupe could be sold simply as a GR model.
Toyota has spent years teaching enthusiasts not to believe every MR2 rumor. This time, however, there is an actual engine running behind the driver, a race-development program and a camouflaged prototype. We have finally advanced beyond wishful rendering and trademark archaeology.
What the Latest Toyota MR2 Report Claims
The most significant new detail is the alleged 2028 launch target. Previous comments from Gazoo Racing leadership placed Toyota’s mid-engine project several years from production without supplying a specific date.

None of those items has been confirmed as a complete production specification by Toyota.
Even the name remains unsettled. Toyota has filed trademarks involving GR MR2 and GR MR-S, but a trademark preserves an option—it does not install a VIN plate on a finished vehicle.
The safest description today is “Toyota’s future mid-engine GR sports car.” Calling it the 2028 Toyota MR2 is reasonable shorthand based on the available evidence, but it is not yet an official model announcement.
The Mid-Engine Toyota Is Real
The strongest evidence is Toyota’s GR Yaris M Concept.
Toyota relocated the engine and transmission from the front of a GR Yaris to a position behind the driver, creating a mid-engine all-wheel-drive development car. In its official GR Yaris M Concept race announcement, Toyota explained that front-engine cars load their front tires with braking, steering and acceleration duties. At the limit, that concentration can accelerate tire wear and promote understeer.
Moving the powertrain rearward changes the weight distribution and allows the front tires to focus more of their capacity on steering. Toyota says the program is intended to produce a car that drivers can control more precisely.
The company also admitted that development has been difficult. Toyota delayed an earlier race appearance while engineers addressed braking, steering and power-delivery problems created by the unfamiliar layout.
That honesty is reassuring. A mid-engine badge does not automatically create great handling. It merely relocates the problems to a more interesting part of the car.
Why Toyota May Use All-Wheel Drive
Every production MR2 has used a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Adding front-axle drive would therefore be a major departure.

An active AWD system could use front-axle torque to help pull the car through a corner, improve acceleration and make the chassis more manageable near its limit. It could also add weight, complexity and cost while reducing some of the simple rear-drive character that made the original MR2 special.
The engineering question is not whether AWD provides more traction. It does. The question is whether Toyota can add that traction without turning a compact sports car into a small supercar carrying the mass and invoice of a large one.
Meet Toyota’s G20E 2.0-Liter Turbo Engine
Toyota has confirmed that the GR Yaris M Concept uses its developing G20E engine, a compact 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four.
The engine was designed for flexible installation. It can be mounted transversely or longitudinally and positioned at the front or middle of different vehicles. Gazoo Racing President Tomoya Takahashi has also said the engine can satisfy future emissions requirements without mandatory electrification, while remaining compatible with hybrid systems.
That flexibility makes it ideal for a broader family of GR vehicles instead of one extremely expensive specialty engine.
Reports place road-car output between 400 and 450 horsepower. Competition development has demonstrated that considerably more is possible, with estimates reaching beyond 600 horsepower when larger turbocharging and race-level calibration enter the discussion.
Those upper figures should not be mistaken for production output.
A road engine must manage emissions, noise, warranty life, heat rejection, service intervals, fuel quality and operation in traffic. A race engine has a different job description and usually a much shorter relationship with its internal components.
Toyota’s reported 400-hp target is still substantial. The current GR Corolla produces 300 horsepower from a 1.6-liter three-cylinder. Giving a compact mid-engine coupe another 100 horsepower would move it well beyond the performance territory occupied by the original MR2.

The GR Yaris M development car places its engine and transmission behind the driver. Reporting has connected the future coupe with Toyota’s eight-speed Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission, already used in performance applications such as the GR Yaris and GR Corolla.
A manual transmission has appeared in older MR2 revival rumors, but it is not confirmed in the latest report. Packaging a clutch pedal and manual transaxle is mechanically possible; certifying, manufacturing and selling enough of them is the less romantic part of the decision.
For an AWD mid-engine car making more than 400 horsepower, the automatic offers faster shifts, easier torque management and a clearer path to consistent performance. It also means enthusiasts may receive a car that is objectively quicker while being denied the opportunity to miss second gear themselves.
Until Toyota publishes specifications, neither transmission should be treated as settled.
Could It Really Be Sold Without a Toyota Badge?
Yes, although the final branding is still unknown.
Toyota announced in January 2026 that Toyota Gazoo Racing would revert to the simpler Gazoo Racing name while strengthening its role in motorsports-bred vehicle development. The new GR GT has already demonstrated that GR can lead a vehicle’s identity instead of functioning as a trim badge attached to an ordinary Toyota.
That makes a standalone GR sports car credible. It also creates an obvious marketing problem: MR2 is one of Toyota’s most recognizable enthusiast names, particularly in North America.
The company could call the car GR MR2, use MR-S in selected countries or create a new global GR name while acknowledging the heritage in marketing. Carscoops argues that discarding the MR2 badge would waste decades of recognition, and that is difficult to dispute.
Honda revived the Prelude name for a hybrid coupe because familiar badges perform useful work. Toyota could invent a new combination of letters, but enthusiasts have already spent years doing the branding for free.
Will It Look Like the FT-Se Concept?
The Toyota FT-Se provides the clearest official design reference, but it does not confirm the production body’s appearance.
Toyota unveiled the FT-Se in 2023 as a compact electric sports-car concept with a low roof, short overhangs, wide rear bodywork and GR branding. The reported MR2 successor could borrow its proportions and visual themes while using an entirely different combustion-engine platform.
Recent camouflaged test vehicles suggest Toyota has moved beyond the GR Yaris development mule, but heavy coverings prevent a reliable reading of the final sheet metal. Renderings based on the FT-Se remain interpretations—not leaked production photos.
The combustion car also needs airflow for radiators, intercoolers, brakes and a mid-mounted turbo engine. Those requirements may produce larger side intakes and different rear proportions than the electric concept.
How Expensive Could the New MR2 Be?
Toyota has not announced pricing, and calling this an affordable sports car would be premature.
The original MR2 delivered mid-engine balance at a mainstream price. A modern successor with a specialized chassis, 400-plus-hp turbo engine, AWD system, active controls and low production volume will be considerably harder to position.
Its likely competitors would not be ordinary compact coupes. Depending on weight and price, the car could overlap with the Porsche 718 replacement, Lotus Emira, Alpine’s future performance models and higher-output versions of the Nissan Z or Toyota’s own GR lineup.

Earlier comments from Gazoo Racing leadership described the mid-engine car as being in the first of four major development stages, with a normal path to production taking four or five years. Depending on when that schedule began and how quickly racing resolves the difficult parts, it could imply a later arrival.
Development programs also change. Emissions rules, business conditions, supply chains and the inconvenient discovery that prototypes break can all move a launch date.
The 2028 target is credible enough to report, but not firm enough to plan a purchase around. Do not sell your SW20 yet—unless you simply enjoy watching the next owner list it for twice the price.

The rumored specifications sound almost excessive for an MR2: more than 400 horsepower, AWD and possible standalone GR status. The original car earned its reputation through light weight and balance rather than output.
