2017 BMW M2 Car Review

When the M2 was first announced, the 365 horsepower coupe was the most powerful 2 series you could buy from BMW. The all new 2017 BMW M2 is the smallest M car in their lineup. The aggressive styling gives the sporty luxury coupe a definitive look, and yet it’s still undeniably M series at it’s core.

At the heart of the BMW M2 is the 3.0 liter six cylinder that has been the basis of BMW’s M car stable. The standard transmission comes in a six speed manual that’s harder to find nowadays. While we would definitely prefer this transmission, there’s also a seven speed DCT automatic gearbox that relies on a dual clutch system to row the gears with ease. The dual clutch automatic also features a launch control that tested well according to Road and Track.

What’s more the 2017 BMW M2 also did quite well in the traditional benchmark tests. Sprinting from 0-62 mph in just 4.5 seconds, the six speed model also scored highly on the skidpad as well.

Go with the seven speed automatic BMW M2, and the jaunt to 62 mph shortens to 4.3 seconds. Governed by a speed limiter to 155 mph, the BMW M2 also comes in a trim that can raise the top speed to 168 mph as well.

2017 BMW M2 Competitors

Some of the bigger rivals for the 2017 BMW M2 include the Mercedes-AMG A45 4Matic as well as the Audi RS3. Both of these sporty competitors boast the power of all wheel drive performance, where the BMW M2 relies on the rear wheel drive setup.

As a shorter, thinner and lower cousin of the M3, the M2 utilizes a stance that puts the wheelbase wider than the M235i. The changes to the 2017 BMW M2 also include a new front fascia and bumper along with a modified grille with matching M colors. To match the wider stance and track in front and rear, the wings are also widened as well. The BMW M division signature stainless steel quad exhaust pipes exit out back, with 19 inch rims on all four corners.

The interior of the 2017 BMW M2 looks the part, with a leather M Sport steering wheel, and lots of aluminum accents.

The coupe also features a kneepad for the driver that’s mounted to the center console.

No Drop Top?

Unlike the current top of the line 2 series, the 2017 BMW M2 will not be offered in a convertible initially. Despite the popularity of the drop top M235i, the M2 will come in coupe form initially, although there’s some speculation as to when that might change.

The 2017 BMW M2 will be priced around $50,000, and will be available in the summer. This price point is slightly above it’s competitors, which makes for an interesting comparison for those who care about bang for buck performance.

While it’s certainly not groundbreaking, the 2017 BMW M2 is undeniably M series and is an excellent sports luxury coupe.
