One of the most popular sports cars of all time, the Ford Mustang has enjoyed a long production range. Today I’ll be showing you how to install your Ford Mustang stereo using this complete wiring guide. There’s a wide range of years in which the Mustang was made, but this guide will begin with the third generation, which is also known as the fox body. Using this Mustang wiring guide you can install any aftermarket stereo or radio you want to.
Third generation (1979–1993)
Popular among racers for it’s lightweight design and the 302 engine, the fox body still has a massive following. Installing a stereo into this generation of Mustang is very easy to do because of the straightforward way the dash comes apart.
The earlier models in this year range will have a very different center console, with several gauges. These are slightly harder to access the radio wiring, however the speaker wiring remains the same.

This is required so that your stereo works properly, or the motorized stereo face moves properly with the right amount of clearance. Of course if you don’t want to upgrade your stereo, you can get away with a FM Bluetooth transmitter as well.
Fourth generation (1994–2004)
Spanning the course of a decade the fourth generation Ford Mustang underwent several changes throughout it’s production run. Throughout these changes there’s just a few variations of the wiring diagram. I will be detailing these differences in the speaker wiring below to make your car audio install a breeze.
The Ford Mustang uses a single DIN setup which is also easy to access because of the center console layout. Because the center console face is removable, this makes accessing your Mustang speaker wires easy.
1994-1999 Mustang Wiring
Radio Constant 12V+ Wire: Green/Yellow
Radio Switched 12V+ Wire: Yellow/Black
Radio Ground Wire: Black/Green
Radio Illumination Wire: Light Blue/Red
Radio Antenna Trigger Wire: Blue
Left Front Speaker Wire (+): Orange/Light Green

This makes the install of a single DIN aftermarket stereo easy to complete. However if you are also installing an amplifier, you will need to tap the BLUE Mustang wire. This wire also happens to be the Mustang antenna trigger for your stereo amp trigger.
2000-2004 Mustang Wiring
The Mustang produced from the year 2000 and upwards has different wiring, as the interior and exterior changed quite a bit. This year range of Mustang also sticks to the single DIN layout, which simplifies things quite a bit.
Using the right install kit however you can mount a double DIN unit into this stereo area. If you are trying to go with this kind of aftermarket stereo, you are best served by using a wiring connector to install your stereo.

The Ford Mustang also uses a factory amplifier in many installations, which is mounted under the passenger seat. You will need to remove the center console and the shifter to access your Mustang stereo wiring.

This is due to the upgraded climate control and the changes to the center layout, which can make your Mustang stereo install slightly more difficult. With the proper install kit or mounting kit however, you can upgrade to a double DIN stereo.
