How To Test a Honda Civic Clutch Pressure Solenoid

The Honda Civic Clutch Pressure Solenoid in your 2001+ Honda is responsible for disengaging and engaging your automatic transmission. Some common problems when this unit goes bad can range from harsh shifting to inconsistent transmission issues. Your Honda Civic Clutch Pressure Solenoid is located on the front of your transmission and is secured by way of 6 bolts.

There are two solenoids on the Honda Civic Clutch Pressure Solenoid assembly. These are labeled below and today will be showing you how to test your pressure solenoid in a 2002 Honda Civic EX. You will be using a multimeter to test the resistance of the solenoids to see if they are still in working condition. If you are not sure what a multimeter is, check out our guide here.

This Civic is equipped with the 1.7 liter SOHC Honda engine, and as stated there’s a few issues when your Honda Civic Clutch Pressure Solenoid goes bad.

Symptoms of a bad Honda Civic Clutch Pressure Solenoid

When these solenoids go bad there’s a lot of early warning signs. The first warning sign is your gear indicator box beginning to blink. For instance if your Honda Civic is in gear, your D light will begin blinking on your Civic instrument cluster.

Of course some of the other issues you will see are an OBDII trouble code, and there are quite a few when it comes to this set of solenoids. Here are just a few below :

The Civic Clutch Pressure Solenoid consists two different solenoids with different colors. The BROWN solenoid is A and the BLACK solenoid is the B Civic Clutch Pressure Solenoid.

How to test your Civic Clutch Pressure Solenoid Resistance

There are two pins for either solenoid in your 2002 Honda Civic Clutch Pressure Solenoid. The BROWN solenoid or SOLENOID A has two wires leading out of it, PIN A is a WHITE wire with a BLACK stripe. PIN B is a RED wire with a BLACK stripe.

To test the resistance of your Civic Clutch Pressure Solenoid, unplug the unit and gently probe the metal connectors of your solenoid using your multimeter. You should perform this test when the Civic Clutch Pressure Solenoid is cold and with your multimeter in Ohms () mode.

With your Honda Civic transmission completely cold the resistance between the two pins should be between 3-10 Ohms  of resistance. If your resistance at SOLENOID A is not within this range, it must be replaced. If it tests good, move onto to the BLACK solenoid, which is SOLENOID B.
