How To Install an Ingalls Stiffy in a Mitsubishi Evolution 8

The 4G63 powered Mitsubishi Evolution may be dead, but it will live on in the hearts of Mitsubishi and DSM fans everywhere. Where else can you find such a great combination of power, grip and style with four doors? But as great as the Evo has been, it’s definitely not without some nagging problems that we wish were taken care of from the factory.

One such issue is the shifter, which has never truly felt smooth or great in any version of the 4G63, inverse or not. In fact, when we first received our Project Evolution back in 2003, that was one of our first fixes by installing a Weapon R engine damper. We’re back at it, this time with an Ingalls Stiffy one of the better engine torque dampers on the market today.

Today we’ll be showing you how to install an Ingalls Stiffy in a Mitsubishi Evolution 8 and showing you how to adjust it as well. We’ll be installing it into a 2005 Mitsubishi Evolution AWD, the part numbers we’re installing today are 93025, along with the optional 93019 bracket.

The Stiffy Engine Torque Damper unit (ETD) is one of the best available torque dampers, adjustable and with two locking nuts that help engine damper preset.

To begin our How To Install an Ingalls Stiffy article, you will need to start by undoing the upper mounts in front of your Evolution and remove the strut tower bar.

There’s 2 more 14mm bolts that secure the strut tower bar to the firewall, and of course the driver side top mount bolts to remove as well.

Here’s a quick look at how the ETD Ingalls bracket mounts to the top of the strut mount. With the front strut bar removed, you can now install this bracket and tighten all the bolts and the tower bar down again.

Now that you have one side of the brackets done, move onto the 12mm bolt that holds the pressure line in place near your engine mount.

With this bolt removed, you should now see the three lower nuts that secure the engine mount. Remove the two OUTER nuts only, and then you will need to install the engine bracket to this mount.

With this bracket mounted, tighten down your engine mount bolts and reconnect the 12mm bolt that holds the power steering line in place. Now it’s time to move onto the adjustment part of the How To Install an Ingalls Stiffy in a Mitsubishi Evolution 8 article.

Take the non adjustable hemi joint side and connect it to the chassis mount first, do not tighten but snug up this bolt. Next unscrew the entire chassis of the engine damper until your female end rotates and aligns with the engine mount bracket.

You want as much preload as humanly possible if you want to restrict your engine and transmission from torquing under load. Keep in mind however that the tighter you go, the quicker the damper may fail and the more engine vibration will be translated to the cabin. Ingalls wants you to set the preload first, but we prefer to do it on the car.

Remember the loosest setting is when the distance from the main housing to the top of the adjustment plunger is 15mm; the tightest setting is when that distance is 10mm. You can adjust the damper by turning the 15mm adjustment nut, and this torque engine damper comes preset from the factory at 14mm.

Once you have everything lined up and tightened down, leave the ETD Ingalls nuts for last. Connect and tighten all the bolts and then loosen the heim joint locking jam nut and adjust it until the Ingalls Stiffy unit matches the bracket side.
