There’s nothing more annoying than getting into your car and trying to start it, only to hear no sound at all because your starter switch went out. Today I’ll be showing you how to check a Ford Mustang ignition switch and get your 1994-1997 Ford Mustang back on the road quickly.
This guide on how to check a Ford Mustang ignition switch is meant for those who already have their starter switch removed. For instructions on how to remove your Ford ignition switch, check our guide here.
Ford’s ignition switch is a large panel that has several offset pins located in it, meant to plug into the steering column. The Ford Mustang Ignition Switch is located under the steering column next to the knee bolster inside your Mustang.
Unscrew the mounting screws that hold the ignition switch in place on the steering column. Unplug the large white electrical connector located on the left of the ignition switch. The unit should be carefully inspected for any cracking or damage to the housing or burned, scorched or bubbling plastics.
The part number for this ignition switch is F0DZ11572A, and it also carries part numbers of F2DC11572AA, F2DZ11572A, and F4DZ11572B as well. Once you have your Ford Mustang ignition switch removed, you can begin the process of testing the unit.
You will be using your multimeter to reference the pins for continuity using the listing below. If you are not certain how to do this, check out our How To Use a Multimeter article here.
Now flip your ignition switch over to locate the switching mechanism on the opposite side. This switch has five natural positions, which you will need to test using your multimeter. With the electrical connector facing away from you, slide the pin on the switch to the furthest left hand position.
This position of the Ford Mustang ignition switch is the ACC position, with the switch in this position measure the B5 and A1 Terminals for continuity. If this pin combination works, slide the pin to the next position moving right, and with the switch in this position it is the LOCK position. Measure the pins P1 and P2 for continuity.
The next click over on the switch is actually the OFF position, and in this position you must test the same pin combination as ACC which is P1 and P2.
The next position to slide your ignition switch to in our How To Check a Ford Mustang Ignition Switch Guide is the RUN position. You will be testing several combinations here with your multimeter for continuity, which are listed below.
- B1 and I2
- B2 and A2
- B3 and A3
- B4 and A4
- B5 and I1
And finally the last position on your Ford Mustang ignition switch is the START position, which is the furthest position to the right with the white electrical connector facing away from you. Refer to our diagram above for the correct Ford Mustang switch position.
With the switch set to the START position, there’s another range of combinations you will need to check for continuity much like the RUN position.
- B1 and I2
- B4 and STA
- B5 and I1
- P1 and GND
- P2 and GND
If the continuity is not present in the pin combinations listed below, your ignition switch is bad and must be replaced.
Always take extreme caution when working around the steering wheel and your Supplemental Restraint systems (SRS), otherwise known as airbags. Never tamper or touch these wires or connector, which could result in the airbag going off, which could cause serious bodily harm or injury.
