It’s a fairly easy question that doesn’t always have an easy answer, especially when you have purchased a used Honda / Acura that had a history of being modded or swapped. Honda ECU’s have a common system when it comes to naming their ECUs, and this label is located on the side of the unit.
- The first grouping of part numbers (pink circle), 37820 in this example is Honda’s part number designation for the ECU.
- The second grouping of part numbers (white circle), P28 in the picture above relates to the vehicle or engine.
- The third grouping of characters (orange circle) is the revision build of the ECU in question.
What ECU do I have in my car?
To determine what year, make and model your ecu originated from use the second grouping of numbers ( white circle ) and refer to the chart below. Keep in mind however that many vehicle or engine codes ( P72, P28 ) came in many various years and models. The revision number can also be located inside the ECU as well as on the actual ROM itself as well as other locations. Read more about Honda ECU chipping here at our How To Chip Your Honda ECU.
You can also refer to the software revision number that can be located inside the ECU cover by unscrewing the middle bolt. Taking a look at the main processor will give you a great clue on how to identify your Honda ECU.
This processor will also have a two or three digit number on the 28 pin ROM chip, which will let you know exactly what your Honda ECU is. Certain engines like the H series and the SOHC F variations found in the Accord and Prelude can use a letter and number code in their ECU.
