Converting from a 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo ignition system to a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo

As some of you know, the 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo and the 1991 have sutble differences between them. One of the major ones is the factory ignition setup, as the ignitor is completely different between the 2.

We often have customers that come in here with tach problems associated with using a 91 ECU in a 90, or ignitor problems in their 90, and want to convert to a 1991 system. This writeup is for that exact purpose.

This conversion is fairly straightforward procedure, and can be installed by any average mechanic.

First, undo your positive terminal on your battery to prevent any accidental electrical problems.

Unplug the 1990 ignitor and coil assembly completely.



Next, strip the loom from your stock ignitor and coil plugs wide open.



Next, cut and solder the corresponding wires of the J122 ignitor to the J722T Ignitor.

OC1--->OC1IB1--->IB1G--->GIB2--->IB2OC2--->OC2



After cutting and resoldering the wires, you should have VB, TACH wires left over.

Now, take the white wire from the coil plug on the ECU side, and solder it to the tach wire on the J722T Ignitor Plug. Then, slice VB ( the black / white wire ) of the J722T Ignitor plug to the Black / White wire on the coil plug ( ECU Side )



Shown is the 1990 Tacho Interface, you will have to remove it completely once you are done with the conversion. The white wire shown is not needed, tape it up securely.



Now tape everything back up securely and plug your 1991 ignitor in! You will have to swap the dash cluster to ensure the tach will work correctly, and / or swap ECUs or pin 6 and 14 for the ECU conversion. Congratulations! You have now converted your 1990 Eclipse to a 1991.
