my timing belt was changed a few months ago and i noticed when i took the cover off the belt is really loose. how can i tighten this myself? because i don't want to risk driving it to the mechanic and having it break on me, then i will be really fucked.

You can tighten it by removing the timing belt cover, and looking for the timing belt tensioner. The tension on it probably just came loose (not very good)... you will want to re-adjust that. If you're not sure which is the tensioner, it's usually a round bearing that the belt rubs against...
There should be a write up somewhere in the DIY section for reference.
