Default TEIN SS Coilovers and EDFC Install

Order TEIN SS here: http://www.prostreetonline.com/x/tei...-coilovers.asp

TEIN SS Coilover and EDFC Install in Scion TC

We are installing a set of TEIN SS Coilovers DSL52-2USS1 and TEIN's EDFC EDKU3-12140 into a brand new Scion TC.

The install of the coilovers is simple and straightforward, but we recommend an experienced tuner install your EDFC and run the wires.

Tools needed :
  • 21mm ratchet
  • 21mm open end wrench
  • 19mm ratchet
  • 19mm open end wrench
  • 17mm ratchet
  • 14mm ratchet
  • 10mm ratchet
  • 10mm open end wrench
  • 12mm open end wrench
  • Wire Strippers or scissors
  • Pliers
  • Soldering Iron
  • Lift or jack and jackstands

The Tein SS coilovers come complete with all hardware and fittings to install into your Scion TC, lets start with the install of the coilovers.

First, beak loose your lug nuts using a breaker bar or tire iron, then raise your TC, either using your jack and jackstands, or lift, as shown here :

Remove your wheels :

Next, open your trunk, remove the rear components, rug, spare tire and associated hardware

Now, undo the mounting bracket for your rear hatch, located here :

Also undo the rear bracket for your trunk strap :

Next, undo the 2 bolts through your front suspension, located here :

Undo the tie rod nut, securing the tie rod to your front suspension.

Now, locate the center console behind the back seats, and flip up the child bracket protection flaps, there are 3 located in the rear center console, Flip those up, and undo the bolts - BUT LEAVE THE PROTECTION FLAPS IN THERE with the bolts secure ,also undo the bolts that are next to the child bracket protection flaps, these bolts are the ones that will alow you to remove the rear center console.

Now, pull the center console gently up and toward the back of the car, make sure that the child flaps are still there and loosely bolted in. The entire assembly will slide out, showing you the back area of your car.

Now, lets leave the back area, and get to undoing your front suspension. Undo the bracket for your brake line, shown here :

Make sure to zip tie the brake line up, or secure it to prevent the hose from stretching or flexing needlessly when you start to remove your suspension

Now, secure your front rotors using another jack, make sure to brace the jack and front assembly as to not damage the rotor, dust shield or any other components.

Now, pull the front hub and brake assembly out of your front shock perch, as shown below :

Now, open your hood, and start to undo the 14s holding in your front suspension :

You will need to undo 3 plastic push pins on both sides of the hood bonnet to allow access to the rear bolts :

Use a small screwdriver and push the pins inward, once they depress, they will click and you can remove them :

Now, finish undoing the 14s up top, and remove your stock shock.

Here, normally you would take your TEIN Coilover, and put it into place, and start putting thigns back together, except we are installing a EDFC on this vehicle, thus some prep work should take place before we have the unit back in. Use the TEIN supplied wrench to undo the adjustment hat on top of the shock

The Top of the adjustment hat will come out completely.

Next unscrew the black adjustment fitting inside the coilover itself using the TEIN supplied hex wrench, the black part should screw out completely.

Now, screw in the gold fitting that came with the EDFC

Now, use the TEIN supplied threadlocker and apply small dabs around the threads on the coilover.

Now, find which EDFC motor goes to what, they have different pitch threads according to what side coilover you are installing them on, front or rear.

Now screw the EDFC onto the threads where you have already applied the threadlocker. These motors are highly delicate, do not expose them to shock or drop them

Now, using a flat head screwdriver, turn the top of the motor counterclockwise 3 full revolutions, and then resnug your EDFC motor.

Here is a comparison shot between your stock unit and the SS coilover

Now, prepping your EDFC is complete, if you arent installing an EDFC, you will pick up here :

Now take the TEIN SS Coilover, and put into place, secure with the 14mm up top first, to make things easier down below when you start to put everything back together

Make sure to put back your plastic securing pins to the hood bonnet after you tighten the rear 14mm nuts.

Put back the tie rod connection, and the 2 main bolts holding the hub assembly to the shock itself, as shown here :

Make sure to put back your brake line bracket and secure with bolt. Now, turn your attention to the rear suspension, there is a rear single bolt holding the rear shocks in place, undo this bolt and remove.

Now pull back the rug in the back of your car, and undo the 3 bolts there, as shown in this picture. After this, you can remove the rear shock as you did the front ones.

Now, remove your stock unit, and put in the rear suspension

Put the lower bolt back through and tighten it down to secure

Make sure you take care in running the EDFC loom coming off the rear suspension through the holes in the chassis, and make sure the plugs are hanging here :

Great, now that your suspensions installed, you should take this time to adjust the height of your coilovers now, before you start on finishing the install of your EDFC. THere are 2 spanner wrenches included in the package that you should use to loosen the 2 lower height rings, and then adjust height and retighten the height rings.

Now, take your EDFC harnesses out and run them to the correct wiring stepper motors that are marked on the loom itself and the stepper motor plug.

On this installation, we've run the harness down the drivers side, under the rear center console section. We also run the rear passenger side the same way to prevent any interference when and if the customer decides on installing a stereo system.

Next, we remove the door paneling as shown here and open the wire loom clips, and pull back the carpet on the drivers side.

Next we work on mounting and running the unit and the wires to each stepper motor. First, pull out your cup holders and center piece to your console.

Now, open your compartment, and undo the screws mounting the center console to the chassis of the car

Now pull up on the entire assembly, which should expose the e brake assembly and lines

Next undo your shift knob, and pull out your cigerette lighter

Pull up on this panel gently, it should slide right over your shifter assembly.

There are 2 screws securing the rest of the center console to your dash, remove these screws

Now, we slide out the center console, and notch the back of it to run the wires through, this customer wanted his EDFC mounted to the top of his cubbyhole in his dash.

Now, we take the 2 looms from the stepper motors on the back suspension, bring them underneath the carpet, and to the center console. Then we run the front looms underneath the car, and go through the passenger side floor panel. We removed one of the plugs underneath, cut a hole and sealed with caulking solution to prevent water from creeping into the cabin or carpet. Now connect the front and rear looms as shown below to the EDFC unit itself. MAKE SURE all wire looms do not :

  • 1. wrap around anything vital
    2. not laying on top of any rough metal or chassis points
    3. interfere with shifter, shifter base, or shifter linkage

Now, its time to run power to the EDFC unit, the green - yellow wire is constant power, the red is switched 12v, and the black is ground. We mounted the ground behind the fuse panel to a chassis ground, and wired the constant and switched to the wiring loom coming off the fuse block located directly in front of the driver.

Now, put the center console back together, and plug in your wiring looms into your EDFC, and mount properly.

A few things to check before you are completed..
  • 1. Did you torque down all suspension bolts?
    2. Did you wrap up the wire looms and secure them away from any vital moving parts?
    3. Did you torque down your wheel lugs?
Congratulations! you have now installed TEIN SS coilovers and EDFC on your Scion TC!!

This is a great choice for TC owners, watch out for the rear cargo area, the metal fins there are like weapons!

Default Tein SS coilover w/ EDFC install on Scion tC

What a great post......Only 1 question - where does the rear motors go? I s there room in the coilover for it, is it just jamed up against the rear mounting location? Can't quite tell from the pictures.

Looking for this set up but wasnt sure it would work, TEIN says they wont work but you can prove them wrong (AT_A_BOY). Please let me know be for I order them.
Thanks again for such a great job

Yep, the rear motors go right on top of the rear shock with the same modification you gotta do to the fronts
