How to program new keyless entry remote
It took me ages to figure out so I thought I would save someone else the trouble. This is for a 1998 Cavalier Z24 but I understand all the sedans are similar.
First you need to access the remote locking control. This is inside the boot on the left wheel arch. You need to pull down the carpet to access it. To get it into programming mode you'll need to place a jumper across the correct two wires on the cable going into it. In my model I found that there was a socket part way along the cable going into the control box with two terminals that must have been installed for the purpose so start by looking for that. If you find it, those terminals are connected to the correct two wires to jumper. If not you will need to jumper the wires at the point they enter the control box. The two to jumper are either the two black wires with the white stripe, or one of those and the plain black wire (ie you need to try three possible combinations). A paperclip or hairclip works well as a jumper but you have to make sure it keeps contact with both terminals/ wires throughout the process.
When the right jumper is on, the car will lock and unlock once (the wrong jumper and it will lock and unlock continuously or do nothing). Keeping the jumper on you then hold down both the lock and unlock buttons on the remote. You will hear an audible click from the control box when its happy, usually within a few seconds. You can then do the same with any other remote you wish to program (up to 4). This process worked with a new remote and also brought my old remote back to life. Once you have programmed all the remotes, remove the jumper and Bob is your mother's brother.
Hope this helps.
