Hey all, new to this community and 4cly's. I just swapped 2.4's in a 96 sunfire GT and would like to step it up some more. I would value the opinions of anyone that has knowlage of what the best performance upgrades/bolt-on's are for this engine. The engine was taken out of a 2.4 98 Sunfire GT and has 72,000 miles on it. I am open to all kinds of options. I've thought of even fabing a scoop for the hood to gain even more cold clean air. This car was free because the orig. engine had a bearing siezed to the crank.
FREE IS COOL!! Thanks for any thoughts |

try the basics, intake exhaust and a dry shot never failed as a power adder. Good luck and welcome!

throw a cold air intake on there, and maybe an exhaust

any namebrands to look for and what to stay away from? Cold air I was looking at the Weapon line?? has some kind of an exhaust on it now and has flex pipe to the manifold due to it kept cracking the solid line, not enough flex. I can't seem to find comp chips. Seems to me this 2.4 just doesn't have alot of options! Where should I be looking, maybe I'm not looking in the right spots.
Thanks |

Fab yourself a cold air intake with as least amount of piping. There are piggy back computers you could buy to modify some stuff, I would stay away from the standard "chips" as they are generally made for completely stock cars.

You'll have to make you're own cai if you want to do it right.
That's my custom made intake along with a few other custom work. The intake is made from various 3inch aluminum pieces, cut to fit, then going into the RKSport.com cai extension tube into the fender with a K&N filter. I've also done the outboard custom DIS setup you see in the pics with the MSD DIS coils instead of the coil over plug setup that comes factory. More spark equals more power and love this setup. MSD 6211 DIS-2 ignition is going in soon to complete the package. Pacesetter 4-to-1 header to a high flow cat to 2.25 piping for a good flowing exhaust helps too. This should give you some idea for a good cai with smooth bends that can be custom made. Hope this helps. Misnblu |

Wow, that's a long intake, misnblu.
Can you route it down before the battery? will save some length. You should measure air temps with the filter there, and other locations to find the optimum location for the filter.

This was done while developing the intake and wrote an article on my website about the findings. I still use the intake air temperature sensor for seeing how warm or cold it is outside. It works quite well. I'm quite knowledgeable about the ld9 engines and Cavaliers so don't think I'm a newbie here. I've been working on cars for almost 30 years from muscle cars to the Sport Compact cars. On the length, that will be changed once I finish modifying the 2.3h.o. intake manifold swap I plan. It's a log manifold with larger diameter runner that will be perfect for my turbo install coming up in the next year. But for now and once I get the manifold installed, will have a direct path to the wheel well once I also finish my battery relocation. Thanks for the info though and the design I have yielded a .1 to .15 better time at the track with air temps staying within 5-10 degrees warmer than outside air, even at the traffic lights. With the wai setup, it ranged from 10-15 degrees while moving to as much as 30+ degrees when idling at a traffic light. The research has been done as well as the testing of what I have and am very pleased with the results. Misnblu |
