Hello everyone. my name is Roy and i am a rookie on Hondas. I have just purchased a 2000 Civic EX 2dr. It has 69,740 original miles. From what little history that i know the car is pretty much stock. The young guy (23) i purchased it from said the engine was locked up but never took the car to get it checked out. He needed to remove the car from the street or the city was going to pick it up. So I bought for 400.00 dollars and I had it towed to my house and parked it in my garage. After charging the battery i proceeded to crank it up. The car actually started right up but it clattered real bad so i quickly turned it off. I called my best friend which happens to be a retired shade tree mechanic. He seems to think that the engine is fine and that it may be only a timing belt problem. The only thing is i can't find anywhere on the car about what size the engine is. The boy claimed it was a 2.3L V-Tech but i didn't see anything on the engine that said so. There was no owners manual in the glove box either. I do know it is a 4 cylinder. Looked up parts for it and the only engines that pertain to this car is a 1.6L. Where else can I look on the car to find out. I did ask if he had done an engine swap and he said it was the original engine that came with the car. I purchased the car for my daughter which is starting college in the fall and desperately needs a good reliable car for school. Being a single parent and on a very strick budget i want to do the work myself. Can anyone send me info on how to change out a timing belt if that is what's wrong with it? Thanks and Please help!!
