Exclamation Wastegate

hello, i need some help.

i have a 2nd generation mitsubishi eclipse GST with a G20 turbo charger. it has an internal wastegate, and i was wondering if i could replace it with an external waste gate. and how would you go about doing this? also which waste gate would be good to run with the G20?
thanks

you would have to weld shut the flapper and take off the wastegate arm off the flapper at the very least, not to mention then you must mount the external somehow.

has this been done before, do you know if there are like direccions to do this properly? i just don't want to deal with the internal wastegate anymore. i heard that is a lot of work to replace the internal with an external, but in the long run people say that is better to run an external.

thanks for your input man

The correct way to do this would be to exchange your turbine housing on the G20 for one that is made for external wastegate use.

Then the external wastegate has to be welded to the exhaust pipe somewhere between the engine and the turbo, and a line will need to be run from the intake tubing to the wastegate for activation reference.

Be careful installing these. You'll need to watch the boost closely on the first run after the install to make sure it's set properly, and you don't run too much pressure.

FYI - The sound will not be quiet at all. When an external wastegate opens up, it's gonna sound like an exhaust leak(since that is basically what it is), unless you run a pipe from the exhaust port on the wastegate to the exhaust pipe after the turbo, but nobody does this.

a lot of dsm guys have converted to external. the main problem is that you air flow sensor calculates this air and if you take it out of the system you need to be able to tune this factor out of your car or else it will sound neat when it blows off but may even hurt your overall performance. if you want some detailed info you might try some of the dsm sites, www.dsmtuners.com is a fairly large nationwide site i have learned a lot cause some one has tried about every thing and listed the results. good luck to you

sorry to say, but that is about the most inaccurate information I have heard in quite some time. If you are going to be here recommending things, please make sure you know what you are talking about.

For the record, an external wastegate will never effect your mass air flow sensor, unless you are venting the wastegate directly on your MAF.

might not make a difference on a chevy but it does on a dsm. you could have been a little more respectful in your response. i guess and engineer in air flow could tell you why--wait i am an engineer in air flow and monitoring controls. ill apologize for my beliefs take my ball (and high hp daily driven dsm) and go home.

lol again, not sure what you are talking about at all. Chevy? DSM? Ive raced, built and tuned DSMs since 96, so yes I have plenty of experience with DSMs thanks Mr Keyboard Racer. Since you are such a DSM god, why dont you take the time to explain to me how a external wastegate will affect his MAF readings. His external will what? lower his Karman reading? by how much? will he get MAF overrun? his car will run rich inbetween shifts? exactly how so? How does the external wastegate do that? Mr Engineer? His exhaust gases are recycled back into his motor? an internal wastegate does that? What you so carelessly recommended to this guy Engineer, is venting his BOV to the atmosphere, not his external. Yes venting the BOV to the atmosphere will release metered air that would otherwise be accounted for by the MAF. Not sure where you work, but mixing up such obvious terms with such relative ease, and then lashing back at me for correcting you, Id hate to purchase whatever product you claim to "engineer"

respectful in my response? I said be accurate if you are going to be recommending things, and since you know SO MUCH MORE about DSMs than a person whose worked at a DSM / EVO shop since 98, someone who has dynoed DSMs for over 10 years, and built more DSMs than you can count, please please please enlighten me, Mr butthurt "Engineer" keyboard racer.

Waiting on your explanation, please make sure to write in big letters so that I may accurately follow your intellectual response
