i see i missed alot since i havent been on here. been real busy. but my cavilier i picked up was suppose to be my gas saver WRONG 10 to the gallon is not good at all. so i foun what my af ratio was its 29:1 at idle and around 20:1 at 2500 rpm i do not know whats wrong i have changed the plugs and wires mainly cause they were old. they all looked good when i pulled the plugs out. i do not know what to go after on this one there is so much it could be im going to mess with it a little more tomorrow see if the o2 sensor is functioning correctly but anything you can think of that could be causing it. please help 3.15 a gallon and i have to drive alot is not good its a 2.8l same thing as a 3.1. i have no clue on the milage on the engine cause suposedly it was swaped before i got it. only other thing i can think of is egr or a fuel injector is not functiong properly which would be a pain because its under the intake manifold. and my thermostat not working correctly would not cause the much of a loss in gas milage.

Check the air filter. A clogged air filter is not good. Also check the fuel filter.

Anyways a clogged cat convertor can do that too. Maybe a bad MAF. You mise well replace the thermostat. You can replace it for less than $5. Your best bet is to find someone with a scanner in your area and see if any codes are being thrown up. |

if that engine has been rebuilt or replaced who the hell knows, look all i can tell you is start with the cheapest parts until you figure out a fix. check your repair manual's trouble shooting section for your car, that might be able to point you in the right direction. if that doesnt do it for you, go to a dealership and tell them whats going on and if they know what might fix it. all that can at least get you in the right direction. -dssrt4

yea its a pain in the ass i think im just goin to get rid of it i hate chevy anyway but i picked the car up cheap. there is no cel on thats the thing thats confusing. but i talked to dealership and the guy said it sounds like an ecu or o2 sensor. and the bad thing is i can not be 100% sure.
but if i get rid of it i no longer have to fix the inner tie rod, timing chain, thrmostat, all rear brake lines, rear shoes and cylinders, front rotors, fix coolant leak i havent found yet, and who the hell knows what else the pos is only worth 500 someone want to loan me 5000 so i can get a new car?

Not to mention changing the thermostat takes 5 minutes, 10 if you have never done it before.

Is it really worth it to replace your thermostat to save a little on fuel consumption? It seems easy enough - just two bolts right? What about those performance onse that kick in at a lower temp? Or is that more fuel use?

Theoretically it doesnt save gas or hurt gas mileage. The colder the air in the engine and the sooner it releases the heat the more HP you have. So getting a lower thermostat will help to an extent, but if you go to low it can damage your transmission because it will never reach the operating temps. It also helps if you have a drilled thermostat. Usually its 2holes about 1/8" so that there is a constant flow of coolant. It helps to get rid of the heat as well. My car comes stock with a 195* thermostat. I dropped to a 180* drilled thermostat. With more mods I can safely drop to a 160* thermostat.

its basically a beater but its my only car. and the colder the engine the more fuel you use but its not going to affect it that much. gas is 3.15 a gallon so i guess i dont feel so bad well that was like tuesday i would really hate to scrape it right now i just bought brand new tires for it. well kinda had no choose i was pretty much on slicks. well i guess the good news is that if i decide to scrape it i can do two big burnouts. untill all 4 tires explode. lolif the engine dont give first.

Hey thanks for the info on that whitedragon. Good to know. I'm just about to purchase a JR supercharger and I think I'll have to start using high octane for that setup once I get all the other parts in place. The way the economy is today, seems like we'll get no relief for the price of gas. Those 1.99 days are over!

I remember back when I had my Saturn SL2 and I could fill my gas tank for $18 when gas was priced high. Now I have a faster car. I definately would rather spend more gas money.
