Default Cam question

I have a question about cams lets say im looking at a 282 intake cam how does that number tell me about lift.

correct me if i'm wrong but i think that means the cam as .282" lift

282 refers to the cams duration ( how long it holds the valve open )
, it won't tell you lift,

Hmmm I thought it was the Duration that you had to figure out.. Oh well... been a wile sense iv messed with any of that stuff...

OK i found the lift rating and what I was looking for its a 284 cam with 11.9mm lift.
now how much more aggressive can I get without too many problems?
