think of a torque wrench for torque. if the wrench is 1 foot long, and you apply 1 lb of force, you have 1 ft lb or torque, and 10 lbs of force is 10 ft lbs of torque ect. horsepower is the ability to do work ( keep that amount of power constant) A human can apply all their weight on the pedal of a bicycle and if the pedal is a foot long, it is equivalant to their weight, eg a 180 lb person can produce 180 ft lb of torque. however, a human doesnt have enough strength to keep this constant. not only can they not do this for any long amount of time, but as the rpms increase your abilty to exert force decreases. ( imagine trying to go 30 mph in 1st gear on a mountain bike.)
in the end, the engine poduces the horsepower, and the drive train (gearing) translates that into torque. i read a description like this on the net a while ago, if i find it i'll post its location. it is much more detailed and very educational.

torque for a street car, hp for a race car, this is very general and oversimplified , on the street a car with lots of torque will be much more fun then a high strung high hp car , give me 400 lb of torque at 2500 rpms over 400 hp at 6500 rpms anyday
