My project is an 89 Acura Legend, which no turbo kits were avilable for, so it had to be custom. I'm already over $6000 in parts, including:
GT3076R Garrett Turbo Turbo related parts(wastegate, bov, piping, intercoolers) Complete stand-alone ECU system(SDS) Stainless exhaust sections Stainless headers(to be modified for turbo) Fuel injectors(750cc) Fuel regulator(AEM) Miscellaneous wiring and gauges Without the computer stuff, just these parts would be around $4250 This doesn't include a $5000 welder, which I've been making payments for three years, but just now started using. But you need a good welder that'll do stainless steel and aluminum if you're going to make your own charge air pipes and exhaust components. If turbo kits are available for your car, I suggest buying a decent one, then upgrading the turbocharger and other components later on. Custom making kits gets expensive quick, because I haven't even shown you what labor would cost!

If you buy what you need, when you see it at the right price, on ebay or the like, you could get away with a lot less money and not cut corners. You say you have a decent TIG for welding your own piping and manifold, lucky bas^*rd, that will make things a lot easier, and you can develop skills that can make you money in the future. I have a MIG and a Stick welder, and have made a good living doing 'odd' jobs for people. I have no idea how much it can/will cost you in the long run, it will depend on the quality and quantity of things you require, But, I'll say it will be heaps cheaper, and you will know how it works, easier when it goes wrong...
