History
Our 1990 Talon TSi AWD served as a super reliable daily driver for nearly one and a half decades. During this time, the car racked up 120K miles, and has yet to break a sweat. We purchased the car as a daily driver in September 2002, and decided to turn it into a full out project car in May 2003. We want to show our customers what some carefully selected off the shelf parts, and a good shop can do with a full interior, very streetable car.

Current Modifications
For a list of current modifications, please visit this page.

Current Timeslips
13.46@100.8 on a 1.82 sixty foot
Power modifications where 3" turboback exhaust, LS1 MAF with Translator, ACT 2900 clutch, 720cc injectors, Walbro 255, 19psi, 91 octane. No porting, stock everything else.

Progress
We work on our Talon as much as we can, but our customers come first. We try to build this car in our spare time. Below you will see what we have encountered modifying our Talon, newest news first.

New Pics!
We have decided to take some pictures of the Talon as it currently sits in the garage. The pics did not come out clean, but they give you an idea of our progress. Enjoy!

Most recent news on top

* The car is getting a polished Venom Intake Manifold and HKS 272/272 Cams.

* With the intercooler kit finished, the nitrous is now getting installed, as well as a rear mount battery. We're throwing in a MSD DIS-2, and since it's a 90, a MSD Tach Adapter.

* Project Talon is currently down getting a Pro Street front mount intercooler. The Spearco core measures 3.5" thick, 9.8" tall, and 24 inches wide. Custom PSI piping and end tanks finish the kit off. This is going to be our 1g FMIC intercooler kit.

* Our ping problem is gone, and the car is running well again. So well that we just ran 13.46@100.8 on 91 octane, and 19 psi of boost. Not bad for a baseline on a 13 year old car! The new turbo is here. We have come up with a turbo that we believe will perform well, and we are going to test and tune it on our project talon and give you our results. It is a custom turbo with a Mitsubishi exhaust flange, but custom housing. We stuffed an HKS wheel into the turbo, and had the specs all set for us by our friends at Innovative. We'll report more when we have more info.

* We have gone with a new suspension setup. We now have Koni "Yellow" Sport shocks, and Ground Control coilovers.

* We have found that our Magnecor spark plug wires had burnt internal sleeves. We replaced them with the Accel Thundersport Race Wires. We have not driven the car yet, but we will report on how these are once we do. So far we have noticed they fit much more secure and flush over the Magnecor, and seem to be better quality overall.

* We have just added Corbeau Carerra seats in black with Corbeau sliders. Very comfortable seats at a great price. We are very happy with them over the stock cloth seats! At the same time, we added a Pioneer CD player, MTX 10inch sub with MTX amp, and Boston speakers all around. This really woke the sound system up. Gotta have style as well as speed!

* We know the 1g MAF is limited in power handling capabilities. We can hack our maf, install a 2g MAF, or install Haltech, but we want to try something new. We bought a LS1 MAF, MAFT, and A'PEXi SAFC II. Since our blow off valve on this project car is a Blitz Blow Off Valve, we aren't recirculating the released air back into the intake. Therefore we are going to run this MAF as a "push-through", instead of a "pull-through" system. Pull-through is the MAF located before the turbo, and push-through is the MAF located between the intercooler, and the throttle body. We will report on our findings as they become available.

* Our A/C on the car was broken, so we decided rather than to fix it, we'll yank it out. The process doesn't take very long if you have worked on a DSM before. We basically removed the air condensor, lines, air compressor, a/c belt, and heavy a/c bracket. With the A/C belt off, our motor has less resistance, and should spin easier. Our A/C had no freon left in it, but if you are going to remove the A/C, make sure you have a safe and ecological way of removing the freon from the system without letting it escape into the ozone.

* We removed the stock rear metal bumper last night. This shaved about 60 lbs off the car. The process was pretty simple. We loosened the rear bumper skin, pulled it back, undid everthing that is attached to the metal bumper, pulled the bolts out, dropped the metal bumper, and put the skin back in place. Whole process took about 45 minutes.

* New round of mods on the way for the Talon. We know it will make good power, so we need something to hold it. We have the ACT Xtreme 2900 Clutch, Pro Street Industries SS Clutch Line, and Aluminum Flywheel. We are also adding a new clutch fork, and clutch fork pivot ball as maintanence.

* I hopped into the Talon this morning, and started it up. I noticed when I pushed on the clutch the pedal wouldn't come back up. I got out and looked around. I found that the clutch slave cylinder has leaked all over the floor overnight. We re-bled the clutch, and hoped it would have enough pressure to get us to the shop. We made it to the shop with no problems, changed the slave cylinder, and we were on our way. At this time we also put in our 4 bolt rear end.

* Our 4 bolt LSD rear end has arrived. One of the weaknesses of the Pre 92 DSMs is the 3 bolt rear end which tends to break somewhere around mid 12s. Some people have run faster than mid 12s on the 3 bolt, but it's on borrowed time. Currently the 4 bolt is running 8s, so this is a great upgrade. We purchased this 4 bolt for $450 shipped, and it arrived within a week and a half.

* Our wheels and tires have arrived. They are 16x7 Racing Hart CP-035s which weigh around 10 lbs each. We have them wrapped in 225/50ZR-16 Dunlop SP8000 tires. We noticed this greatly improved our steering response, and the car feels more nimble.

* We are currently battling a pinging problem with our talon. We have datalogged the car, and found the o2 values to be rather low, around .80v. However, EGTs never rise over 850C at WOT to redline in 3rd. We added a BBK 255lph fuel pump, NGK BPR7ES spark plugs, and Magnecor Spark Plug Wires and then datalogged our results. The ping is still there, but the O2s jumped up to .96, and the EGTs dropped to about 800C. We are guessing the problem could be with a heat soaked intercooler that is full of oil after 13 years of having the PCV dump into the intake. It could also be this, and a combination of overrunning the MAF. We will report on our findings.

* With the boost controller on the car, we added a Pro Street Industries 3" Downpipe w/ Testpipe, and a A'PEXi N1 Catback. After this modification, we noticed the motor is now pinging over 5000 rpm and about 15 psi of boost. We do currently have boost creep, and this will have to be addressed. We datalogged the car, and found it is running very lean, even though our EGTs are not showing over 850C. Our o2 values are .80v. We could have a problem with a bad o2 sensor, overrunning our MAF, or a heatsoaked intercooler with over 13 years of oil from the PCV system. We will investigate the problem.

* After the intake was complete for now, we added a Hallman Pro Boost Controller. We raised the boost to 1 bar (about 15 psi). We noticed the boost would come on sooner with this boost controller over stock.

* Our next step on the intake route was to smooth out the flow of the air going from the intercooler to the throttle body, and replace the small stock 1g throttle body elbow. We fabricated an awesome 2.5" Upper Intercooler Pipe, and flanged it for the Blitz Blow Off Valve. Then we fabricated a 2.5" throttle body elbow. All together, we noticed this increased throttle response, and didn't notice any ill effects of not venting the blow off valve back into the intake snorkel. Only slight idle problem was letting off the gas during a WOT pull, and then letting the RPMs fall. The ISC sometimes would not catch the motor, and it would die. Tightening the screw on the blow off valve helped this, and we haven't experienced any problems with the car dying at lights anymore.

* After our gauge install, we decided that the modifications can begin. We removed the air filter canister, and removed the stock boost restrictor in the boost control solenoid. We tested the car, and noticed an easy improvement in throttle response, a much louder turbo, and a .2 bar increase in boost to .9 bar.

* Our car is currently stock. The best modification for a currently stock DSM is gauges. This will be the foundation of all power modifications from here on out. We have selected the GReddy 60mm Non Peak Boost Controller, and the GReddy 60mm Non Peak EGT gauge to monitor our vitals. After installation, we have found our bone stock Talon runs about 820C EGTs at redline in 3rd gear. Boost is .7 bar with no boost creep.

* Before we start modifying we need to fix some problems:
o Stock tach doesn't work correctly. It doesn't show revs over about 3500rpm, and when WOT, the tach drops to zero. We found the problem was the previous owner put in a 91 ECU. The car is a 90. He swapped wires 6 and 14 like he was supposed to, but it still didn't work correctly. We swapped in a 90 ECU, undid the 6 and 14 wire swap, and the tach works great now.
o All 4 shocks are blown. Very typical for a 1g DSM with so many miles. We had some KYB GR2 shocks laying around, and Eibach ProKits, so we threw those on. It got rid of the bouncy feeling, and the car floating after it hits bumps.
o Front rotors were severly warped. We threw on some Brembo Replacement Rotors, and PBR pads. Much better.
